THE TERRIBLE DISASTER IN JAPAN.

2000 PEOPLE SUFFOCATED.

The mail steamer Oceania brings further details of the recent disaster at Kamli, showing that it was far more terrible than Scat reported. A theatrical performance was being given in sheds constructed of mats, the audience consisting of about 3000 people Flames burst out from one or two places in the matting at the height of the performance, and spread with the utmost rapidity. A panic ensned. Escape was cut off from most of the points of egress by the roaring flames, and it is computed that at least 2000 were suffocated or trampled to death. While one of the sheds, occupied entirely by women and children, was blazing, a band of Chinese, whose presence up to that moment had not been suspected, seized 40 of the best looking women and succeeded in carrying them away. The people of the town ran to the sheds and endeavoured to extinguish the flames and save the unhappy victims. Whilst so engaged the Chinese robbers set fire to the houses in the village, plundered the shops of all their valuables, and then made their eßcape in boats.
