EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.
T— # ; The usual two-monthly meeting of the / Bruce Clutha branch of the Otago Educational Institute was held at Stirling on, Saturday. The president (Mr James Reid) occupied thee hair,and there were twenty-four members presents It was resolved that the annual picnic of the branch be held on the 21st November at Taieri Mouth, and that all the teachers in the district, whether members or not, be invited to join the outing. Mr PeaLtie kindly consented to make all arrangements with regard to. the boat. . : ■ A letter was read frarh the committee of management, asking the branch to noiriinate delegates to the annual meeting of the. New Zealand Educational Institute, to be held at Auckland in January, — Messrs James Smith (Waihola Gorge) and C. Mahoney (Fairfax) were nominated. Three remits were passed by the meeting, to be included in the work for the conference. Mr Mahoney then gave an address on the " Advantages of Oral Composition," and described fully the manner in whjch he carried on the system in his own school. He strongly advocated its introduction, as lightening the teaching of the subject, and providing an easier means of arriving at a desired end. Mr Mahoney's remarks were favorably criticised by the meeting, and some points on which more information was desired, were explained by him. Mr W. M'Elrea, with the aid of a model of of his own construction, then gave a most graphic description of his method of teaching ]^j^e<^rawing.^//^^^r^e^* ; 3^^' At the coiielastcin of his paper, Mr M'Elrea was congratulated on the excellent manner in which the difficulties of the subject had been elucidated. Mr M'Elrea's method is deserving of wider publicity than it received, and it is to be hoped that his model may yet come into general use. This concluded the business.
