The Catholic World o£ Boston takes the position that the saloon system is an organised temptation, inimical to the ;public weal, and .urges the duty of Catholics to take an, active part for its utter suppression. Bishop Spalding of Peoria declares that the Saloon is a public niiisance, and must be extinguished as a menace and a danger to the State. Which System Pays. — The Christian Leader says ':—* The Indian. Government present a humiliating contrast to the King of Samoa. So keenly alive is the latter to the devastation wrought by intoxicants that he has issued a pro- . clamation that 'none shall be sold, given, or offered to be bought or bartered by an native Sarooan or Pacific islander resident in Samoa.' The former declare that the excise laws are beyond criticism, and that the evil must proceed on. its course ofruin. Which is the better statesmanship? Does a revenue-yielding debauchment of the people pay f A Drink for the Harvest Field. — MiAbbey, the secretary of the Church o£ England Tempierahee Society, recommends the use. of temperance drinks Corthe'harvest field in 4ieu; of alcohol liquor; He asks us to publish the subjoined receipt for making it : — * Stokos ' is prepared thus : Put jib of oatmeal ground as fine as flour, about six ounces of loaf sugar, and half a lemon (sliced) into a pan ; mix all well together with a little warm water ; then add a gallon of boiling water ; stir thoroughly, and use when cool. The lemon may be otnitted, or any other flavoring used used instead. Cost, 3d a-gallon.
