INSTALLATION OF MAYOR.

♦ : The -annual statutory meeting of the Balclutha Borough Council, foT the installation of Mayor, was held in the Council Chambers at noon on "Wednesday. There were present : Councillors Hutchins, Canning, Stewart, Potter, and Hogg. Councillor Canning was called to the chair. After some routine business, the Chairman, in a few appropi-iate remarks, moved that Mr Hogg, the Mayor elect, take the chair. Mr Hogg toot the chair accordingly. He said it was customary for a Mayor, on . assuming . office, to make a few remarks. On that occasion, however, he would be brief, seeing it- was the day of the annual show, and the time of both Councillors and citizens was so fully occupied. He, however, would take the opportunity of explaining that when he made up his mind to seek election to the office of Mayor of Balclutha, he' did so with a full sense of the responsibilities of the office, and the arduous nature of the duties it involved, more especially at the present time. Now that he had secured the office he would endeavour faithfully to carry out the doxties of that office to the best of his ability. He would, however, remind Councillors that they also had responsibilities and arduous duties to perform, and that without their hearty co-operation the business of the Borough could not be successfully carried out. He had no dobt he would have this co-operation, and assured them he would faithfully carry out their instructions, energetically, and without procrastination. He would only add that it would be his endeavour to promote a feeling of unity and harmony both inthe Council and amongst the citizens , so that all might combine to one common end — the besfc interests of the Borough and the inhabitants. For his own part, he wan fully convinced that new the river bank protection works had commenced, "and no doubt would be successfully carried out, Balclutha had a successful future be ■ fore it, such as it never yet had, and such as but very few dreamt of. In his new position of Mayor, he would do his best to bring about this prosperity. He thanked them for their presence on that occasion, more especially considering . the urgency with which they were required elsewhere that day. This was all the business.

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a process for automatically extracting text from scanned pages. OCR enables searching of large quantities of full-text data, but it is not 100% accurate. The level of accuracy depends on the print quality of the original newspaper and its condition at the time of microfilming. Newspapers with poor quality paper, small print, mixed fonts, multiple column layouts or damaged pages may have poor OCR accuracy.

The page where this item appears has an estimated OCR accuracy of 11.79%.
