McCORMACK’S BAY CAUSEWAY

WORK TO BE RECOMMENCED TO-DAY

Work on the McCormack’s Bay causeway will be recommenced today, but the City Engineer (Mr A. R. Galbraith) does not expect that the road will be open to motor traffic until about February of next year. The construction of the causeway was suspended more than two years ago, and since May of last year the Maui Highways Board has been negotiating with the Christchurch City Council and other local bodies about the apportionment of the cost of completion. Satisfactory arrangements . were made last week at a conference attended by the Acting-Minister for Public Works (the Hon. P. C. Webb). Mr Galbraith said yesterday that two men would begin work to-day, clearing the embankment of grass and weeds. Tenders would be called for the construction of the two bridges needed,' but the metalling and sealing of the road would probably be done by the council’s staff. The progress of the work might be held up by the shortage of supplies of structural steel, and because of this possibility it was difficult to say when the road would-be opened to traffic.
