Mrs Ynyr Donald, who has been visiting her daughter, Mrs Garland, Palmerston North, has returned to Christchurch, and is staying with Mrs G. R. Park, Hewitt's road. Misses Ruth and Judith Ffitch (Khandallah) are visiting Christchurch, and are the guests of Miss Coleman, New Brighton. Mr and Mrs R. F.'Oldman have left Christchurch for Karamea.

Miss Mary Hunt (Chapter street) left Wellington on Monday by the Awatea for Sydney, where she will be the guest of her aunt, Mrs Alan Webb.

Miss Nancy Hookham (Papanui) is spending a long holiday in the North Island.

Miss Biddy Leight (Wellington), after spending some days with Mrs J. C. Scott, Selwyn street, is now visiting her aunt, Mrs Gerald Nairn, Christchurch.

Miss Evangeline Worden (Roseneath Flats, Papanui road) and Miss Vida Frost (Upper Riccarton), who have been spending the Christmas holidays at the Grosvenor Hotel, Timaru, have returned to Christchurch.

Misses Audrey and Nola Christopher (Wellington) are visiting Mrs W. E. Brown, St. Albans. Miss Doris Winter and Miss Josephine Wallace (Papanui) are the guests of Mrs P. A. Engelbrecht, Oxford.

Miss Eileen Orchard (Papanui road) and Miss Nellie Judson have left for a motor trip to Peel Forest and Timaru, where they will spend a fortnight's holiday. Miss Bromley Cocks (Ranfurly street) will leave at the end of next week to visit Mrs C. Burdon, Woodbury.

Mrs Cecil Wynn-Williams and Miss Ruth Wynn-Williams (Papanui road) are staying with Miss I. Rutherford (Montrose) ' during Christmas and New Year. Mr and Mrs F. W. Denton (Lyttelton) are spending the Christmas holidays with Mrs C. E. Gwatkin, Opawa.

Mr and Mrs Stewart Heard (The Doone, Waiau) will leave North Canterbury early in January to make their new home at Loburn. Mrs A. R. Sherris (Innes road) and her coh-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs C. Beatson (Nelson), have left for Timaru, where Mrs Sherris has taken a house during the Dominion tennis championship tournament.

Mr and Mrs A. L. Styche (Deans avenue, Christchurch) spent the Christmas holidays with Mr E. X. Le Lievre and Miss M. Le Lievre, "Owaka," Akaroa. Mrs R. Anderson and Miss I. McKenzie (Ladbrooks) are the guests of Mrs C. W. Leete, "Cranford," Akaroa. Mrs R. Acton-Adams (Christchurch) has been staying with Mrs Herbert Acton-Adams (Tipapa) during the Christmas holidays. Miss Heather Horrax (Wellington) arrived in Christchurch yesterday, and is staying with her aunt, Nurse Corkill, matron of the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association. Mr and Mrs Eric J. Preen and family left Wellington on Monday for Sydney, from where Mrs Preen and her daughter and son will leave for England on a long holiday. Mr and Mrs Leo Morrison ("Pauri Bank," Racecourse Hill) were the guests of Mrs M. J. Le Lievre, Akaroa, for Christmas. Mr and Mrs P. G. Riches (Akaroa) are spending a holiday at Woodbury, Geraldine.

Miss Peggy Acton-Adams (Tipapa, North Canterbury), who has been visiting the North Island, has returned home. Mr and Mrs N. T. Phaup left last night by the steamer express for Wellington, where they will make their home. Miss Patricia Powrie (Cashmere Hills) is at present the guest of Miss Sheila Atkinson (Woodbank, Hanmer Spring's). Later she will stay with Miss Nance Blunden (Carvossa, Waikari) and Mrs David McLeod (Grussmere, Cass). Misses Joan and Ruth Singleton (Kelburn, Wellington), who have been at Porter's Pass, are the guests of Mrs R. Bruce, "Glencarrigh," Akaroa.

Mrs G. W. Thomas (Wellington), Miss C. Thomas, and Mr P. Thomas (Lyttelton) are spending the holidays at Akaroa. Miss Iris Goom, Mr T. Goom, and Miss R. Berry (Papanui) are the guests of Mr and Mrs A. J. Read, Akaroa.

Mrs Robinson (Fendalton) has been visiting Akaroa and was a guest at the Metropole Hotel. The death occurred last night of Mrs Myrtle Allison, wife of Mr Robert Allison, the well-known singer, and daughter of Mr H. Williams, of Somerfield street. Miss Eleanor Holland, daughter of the Bishop of Wellington and Mrs Holland, left Wellington by the Awatea on Monday en route for England, where she will be married soon after her arrival.

Mrs Patrick Mallon, wife of the American Vice-Consul at Singapore, arrived in Auckland by the Narbada on Monday. Mrs Mallon is a daughter of the late Mr C. E. Fabian and Mrs Fabian, of Hobson street, Wellington, and is visiting New Zealand after an absence of seven years. Miss B. Chilcott, of Auckland, who recently accepted a position in Istanbul, has left there for Jndia. where she now holds the post ot tutor to the grandson of the Gaekwar of Baroda. The post is an interesting one, as the Gaekwar is one of the most enlightened rulers and his state one of the most modern. Miss Chilcott travelled through the Levant and arrived in India on November 26, and expects to be there during the next two or three years. It appears that the Gaekwar is much interested m Australia and New Zealand, and intends visiting these countries at some future time.

The November number of "Mother and Home" is a practical magazine for intelligent women, or, more correctly, it is two magazines in one. It contains expert advice on the upbringing of children and the upkeep of the home and a generous section is devoted to fashions of to-day. LONDON PERSONALS (from oub own correspondent.) LONDON, December 9. Miss Eleanor McHardy (Hawke's B3y) is making her headquarters with her sister, Mrs Clask, at Woolwich. Shortly after her arrival, she went for a month's motor tour of the Continent with Miss Erica Hoby. The tour started in Belgium. At Aachen they stayed with friends and then they went down the Rhine Valley to Munich. Thence on to Austria through Salzburg and the Upper Austrian lakes, where they stayed with friends at Gmunden. In the spring or summer, Miss McHardy hopes to go by air to Budapest. While in Vienna she and Miss Hoby met Mrs Allen and Miss Diana Allen (Christchurch), and Miss Juliet Heygate, who are at present living there. Towards the end of January Miss McHardy hopes to go to Grindelwald for a few weeks ski-ing with some Swiss friends. After that she will make a tour in Italy and France. Her return journey to New Zealand will probably not be begun until the autumn. She hopes her route will be via Suez and Singapore. At Bournemouth on November 14, the marriage was solemnised of Miss Viola Macmillan Brown, daughter of the late Professor J. Macmillan Brown, and Signor Notariello, the well known vocalist. Signor Notariello may make a tour of Australia and New Zealand in the near future. At present he and his wife are living at Bournemouth. Dr. A. J. Harrop, agent in England of the University of New Zealand, makes reference in to-day's issue of the "New Zealand News" to the tragic death of Sir Edwin Deller, principal of the University of London. Dr. Harrop says Sir Edwin's death is a blow, not only to London, but to the universities of the whole Empire. He was treasurer of the Universities Bureau of the British Empire, a body which acts as a clearing house of university affairs and is of special value in keeping overseas universities in touch with those of Britain. In spite of his manifold duties, Sir Edwin had consented, only a few days before the accident occurred, to act on a small committee with representatives of Canada and New Zealand to consider the question of exchange of staff between universities of the Empire. His wise counsel and good humoured tolerance will be greatly missed. On December 7, at West Worthing, the death occurred of the Rev. Edward Hutton Bell, third son of the late Sir Francis Dillon Bell, K.C.M.G., C.B. Mrs Bell survives her husband. The funeral is to take place at Heene Church, Worthing, on December 11. The death occurred at the Royal Masonic Hospital, London, on December 4, of Anne, wife of Mr H. P. Olney, of Ceylon, and daughter of the late W. Macintosh Murray and Mrs Raymond Parker, of Canterbury. Since leaving Auckland toward the end of August, Mr and Mrs R. Stone have visited a number of countries. They spent over a month in America. They left New York by the Queen Mary on October 12, disembarking at Cherbourg. They went on to Paris where they were the guests of friends who live in France four miles from the Swiss border. While staying there they made some very interesting trips by motor-car, among places visited being the famous St. Bernard Auspice. Mr and Mrs Stone arrived in London three weeks ago and since then the latter, who is a well-known vocalist in Auckland, has been continuing her studies. She has been offered a part in a production to be staged in Glasgow, but this she has declined, and she has now under consideration an offer of a part in the musical production, "Tulip Time," which is to open in London in February. Tours are to be made in Scotland, and Mr and Mrs Stone hope to visit Germany before they return to the Dominion.
