TWO SEATS GO TO LABOUR

REPRESENTATION ON CITY COUNCIL SIR HUGH ACLAND HEADS POLL In the by-election of three city councillors, one Citizens' AS|o6iation candidate and two Labour representatives were successful. Sir Hugh . Acland. who was defeated in the contest for Mayor last May, headed yesterday's poll with 15,590 recorded votes, the Labour representatives, Messlra R. M. Macfarlane and G. Manning being next in order. The latter had a majority of 867 over the next candidate, Mr T. J. Maling, a nominee of the Citizens' Association, who headed the list of defeated candidates at the election last year. Although two Labour candidates have been returned, the voting strength of the Citizens' Association representatives has not been affected, and they still have a clear majority on the council.

There were six party nominations for the three vacancies, which were caused by the resignations of Messrs Beanland, Archer, and C. E. Jones, the latter because of health reasons, and the others to contest the mayoralty. The Citizens' Association and the Labour party each nominated three Candidates, and there was one Independent, Mr B. Ahlfeld. AHLFELD (I.) .. .. 1,370 Mr Ahlfled was the only candidate for a seat on the council to forfeit his deposit. Although the Labour party has won two seats, its representation on the council will be increased by only one. Mr Archer, who has been on the council for the last 15 years—part of that time as Mayor—resigned his seat to oppose Mr Beanland in the Mayoral election. Thus, the Labour representatives on the council number five, the rest of the 16 seats being held by the Citizens' Associationi As the new Mayor is a representative of the Citizens' Association, the voting strength of the parties will not be altered.
