COUNTY COUNCILS.

j WAIMAIRI. The Waimairi County Council met last evening. Present: Crs. T. Q. Newnham (chairman), C. E. Cross, W. J. Walter, F. S. Scott, C. W. Moore, W. G. Chapman, G. Gardner, J. Liggins, W. Price, and W. P. Spencer. An application for a light at the corner of Hawkins' and Radcliffe's roads was granted, and it was also decided to grant the Waimairi Golf Club two electric light poles. In response to a petition from the residents of Plynlimon road it was decided to change the name to Lloyd street east of the railway. An application for a grant to the Marshland Library was held over until the estimates are considered. A letter was received from the Christchurch Fire Board notifying that the agreement for fire protection expired in June, and asking whether a renewal was desired. The matter was referred to the members of the ridings concerned to ascertain if some reduction could be made in the rates charged. A letter from the Christchurch Fire Board stated that the protection of Upper Riccarton would mean the building of underground tanks every quarter-mile of a capacity of 10,000 gallons pnd at a cost of about £IOO each. The chairman said that the ratepayers could not stand the expense, and it was decided to refer the letter to the local burgesses' association. Cr. C. E. Cross was appointed to attend the election of the Technical College Board of Governors, and was instructed to support Mr W. G. Chapman. It was decided to support a proposal from the Canterbury Progress League suggesting that each local body in the district should at once communicate with the Prime Minister (the Ht. Hon. G. W. Forbes) urging him to take steps to have State lending departments placed on the some footing as private mortgagees. KANGIORA. The Rangiora County Council met on Tuesday. Present: Messrs W. Stalker (chairman), G. K. Crysell, H. Tallott, A. Mcintosh, J. M. Young, and J. Brosnan. The financial statement showed receipts for the year ended March 31 to have been £12,531 9s 7d and the payments £12,430 9s, leaving a credit balance of £125 7s sd. In consequence of a complaint from the registrar of Canterbury College about the condition of drains at Waikuku, it was decided to serve notice to clean on the property owners concerned. It was decided to agree to the renewal of the agreement relating to the allocation of heavy traffic license fees collected by the Christchurch City Council. At the request of the Canterbury Progress League it was agreed to write to the Prime Minister urging him to take steps to have State lending departments placed on the same i footing as private mortgagees.
