OBITUARY.

MR.. H. PANNELL. Mr Harry Pannell, who died on Friday, aged 79 years, after a long illness, was a very well-known and highly respected resident. Mr Pannell arrived in Christchurch in the early seventies, and established the boot business of Pannell and Co. in Manchester street. About twenty years ago he relinquished this business to his brother, and started as a contract carter, having at one time over forty horses and drays and a large number of men in his emplov. He bought and improved uneven sections of land ia various parts of the City, but more especially in his own district of Avonside. Here, in a block of sandhills ho formed a road (Pannell's avenue) and levelled the sections, and in four years there grew up quite a township. The neighbouring district went ahead as well. Mr Pannell was also largely instrumental in getting the Wainoni and North Beach bus service started. A number of the roads in the district were opened by him, especially parts of River road. Cuffs and Onslow roads, and a good deal of Wainoni road. He laid out and took great pride in his garden, which was formed from a sandhill and a big hole. Mr Pannell was always ready and eager to push h ja _ district ahead, and as an employer ol labour was very popular. The good work which ho did is in evidence everywhere in Wainoni. MR F. WATSON. Mr Frederick Watson, who died at his residence, Cameron street West, Ashburton, at the age of. 69 years, on Tuesday, has been a resident of the Ashburton County for about 20 years. He ■was born at Kiccarton and educated at the Kiccarton School. After leaving school Mr Watsoa was engaged in farming at Ladbrooks and Waikari and later took up land at Lanriston, whence he retired to Ash burton 13 years ago. During his residence in the Ladbrooks and Waikari districts Mr Watson was on several local bodies. He was 'a director of the Central Dairy Companv and a member of the Lincoln Druids' and Masonic Lodges, as well" as the vice-president of the -Hawarden A. and P.* Association, of which he was one of the founders. After retiring to Ashburton he was instrumental in establishing the first motor transport business in the town, which was later sold to the Ashburton Transport Company. He wa's a director of the Ashburton Motors, Ltd. Since he took up residence in the Ashburton County ho has taken no interest in oublic affairs. Mr Watson married a daughter ot the late Mr J. J. Herrick, of Tai Tapii. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs It. J. Low, of Highbank. and Mrs A. Holmes; of Ashburton, and two sons. Messrs G. L. and F. • W. Watson, of Ashburton. He had suffered from bronchitis and went to Montreux to recuperate. Ho was knocked down by a motor-car on December 2Gth. From 1861 to 1880 he resided in Melbourne, where he was superintendent of the Government Brcnnan torpedo factory. On his return to England before the war he became a consulting engineer for the Munitions Inventions Department, and was engaged on confidential aircraft research.] ■
