PROPOSED PARK FOR FEND ALTON.
TO THE EDITOB OP THE PRJESS. Sir, —I would be glad if you would grant me a little space to make the position of matters clear to tbc ratepayer* concerned in the movement to acquire a park for Fendalton. The park proposal has originated from the Fendalton Burgesses' Association, which has an executive committee of practical business men, who are quite capable of cfliciently handling this or any other m:itter pertaining to the welfare of Fendalton. They confidently anticipate the support of all right-thinking and progressive residents in the area affected. The recent public meeting of ratepayers, convened to consider the proposal, was called by circular letter to ratepayers of the special area only, and required the posting of over 430 of such letters. This means over 450 families, and is an indication of the need for a park for the district. Batepayers outside the proposed rating area were not notified. The attendance practically filled th< hall, which is by no means a small one, and the resolution to support the proposal adopted by the meeting
was carried on a show of hands, with only six dissentient?. Therefore the statement made that the meeting consisted of about fifty persons, half of whom were not in the park rating area, is quite inaccurate. It was expressed by a Councillor present, that the verdict of the meeting was a sufficient authorisation to the Waimairi County Council to institute proceedings for a poll. Prior to the matter being considered by the Council, it was, by resolution of my Committee, decided to circulate a petition for a poll in the district. A copy of this petition is at my office, No. & <hancery lane, and is available for signature. It is the earnest endeavour of the Association to raise all possible funds to permit of financing the purchase at the lowest minimum of special rate and a strong finance committee has been set up with this object. Subscription lists have already been issued. The alternatives to the park proposal arc stagnation of manly sport and physical recreation in Fcndalton, and the congregation at street corners of numbers of our youths for lack of the opportunity for better employment of their leisure hours.—Y'ours, etc., L. J. WILKIN'S, Hon. Secretary. Fcndalton Burgesses' Assn. November 22nd, 1929.
