STREET EXTENSIONS.

PAPANUI AND SYDENHAM. One of the decisions of the City Council last evening was to purchase land for the extension of Halton street, Papanui. The Electricity Committee reported as follows: Both from the town-planning point of view and in the interests of electrical reticulation, it is desirable that Halton street should be extended to St. Andrew's terrace. The section facing St. Andrew's tecrace was offered by the owner, Mr h. B. Hart, for £3OO. The owner of the property between that and the end of Halton street, Mr Eiby, offered to dedicate the necessary land for street purposes, and to construct tho street through from the end of Halton street to St. Andrew's terrace. It was agreed that the Electricity Committee should pay half the price, £l5O, and the Finance Committee the other half, the Electricity Committee making the full purchase in the meantime, provision being made in next year's estimates for a refund of the £l5O advanced by the • department on behalf of the Finance Committee. On the grounds stated, confirmation of this proposal is recommended to the Council. The "Water Supply and Works Committee reported as follows: The Council recently approved of the laying out of a new street in a subdivision off Longfellow street. Sydenham. Messrs Hastings, Bridge, and Parkinson, licensed surveyors, who are acting for the owner of the property, have now written stating that a considerable amount of filling is required the centre of the road, and in order to minimise expense as much as possible they ask that they be allowed to reduce the grade of the street from 1£ inches per chain to 1 inch. The City Engineer states that the new street will be required to very little drainage and, as it will be sewered and it will be necessary to carry off storm-water drainage only, Messrs Hastings, Bridge, and Parkinson's request has been acceded to. Milford street is s private one, 50 links in width % running from Papanui road to St. George's Hospital. The Council has been requested to undertake the formation of the street with a view to its being eventually dedicated as a public street. The estimated cost of providing a 20ft carriageway, 10ft tar macadam footpath, and sft grass margin, with kerb and channel on one side (nsing old tramway metal as base) is £333, and the committee recommends that, subject to that sum being deposited, it be given authority to have the work put in hand. The hospital ! authorities have also asked that they be given approximately 150 yards of old tramway metal for the purpose of laying- out the drive-ways into the hospital grounds. This metal will be made available from the Tramway Board's construction works in Papanui road within a few yards of the hospital grounds, and the committee has decided to accede to the request. Thi clauses *er« adopted.
