♦ ALTERATIONS APPROVED. NU3IBER OF OBJECTIONS. In the case of eight of the proposed alterations of street names, objections were received from residents, and the City Council struck these off the list at its meeting last evening. A resolution was carried referring these names to the By-laws and Finance Committee, with an instruction that they be recon-. sidered, and a.report be brought down, l'he alterations to which no objections were taken were confirmed. The following were the proposed alterations which it was decided to hold over, with.the objections:— • Albert street to Dobson streets— Petition signed by fourteen residents strongly objecting to the change of name. Alexandra street to Ashby _ street— F. D. Jones objects, and points out that it was altered from Victoria street, but he would not object to , Mary street, and suggests that Alexandra street remain and Vogel street : be renamed Alexandra- street. Rich- ! mond Burgesses' Association suggest that Alexandra street should be re- ' named Vogel street from Fitzgerald avenue to Forth street including the. K part of Tweed street adjoining Vogel Church lane to Cheshire lane—Kev. 0. Fitzgerald objects, and points out that it is appropriately named, as it leads to the Avonside Church; also ' stating, that the whole congregation strongly objects to the entrance to their church being named Cheshire lane.- . ; Dyer's road >to ' Barker S. Parish objecting to alteration of <■ name to Barker street, and. suggest- ' ing Parish street,, and giving reasons for the suggested alteration, some of which are as follows:—-Grand- : father,' William- Parish, arrived -by •: the ship Cressy in 1850: was- acon- ■ tractor. Formed Ferry road and helped construct Bridle Path.- Fonn- . ed'many roads and streets in and around City. . Member of the first Heathcote Road Board. Parish street, Linwood, was named after him, but was altered first to Cambridge street and later to Bordesley street. Langdon's • road ■to ■ Lambeth street— Papanui Progress League protest against: any. alteration-of the name , and state that residents in the district feel it to be a slight on. the. family who have resided for many years in the district. North Avon road (from - London street) to: Fitzgerald avenue—Richmond Burgesses' Association suggest, that one name be given to North ■•' Avon road from London street to Stanmore road, including Fowke -,;'6treet; also suggesting that Draper street and Swann's r'oad : 'be one.name ..from Heywood terrace to Swann's ■ oridge. St. Andrew's terrace to Walnut avenue—Petition signed by ten ratepayers objecting to the name of Walnut avenue, 'and; suggesting Raneleigh terrace.
