' MR THOMAS MACARTNEY. On Tijuisuay tnere pabsod away

Mr Macartney was born in County Antrim, Ireland, in 1841, and arrived in Lyttelton in the ship Zealandia in 1802. He followed lurmxng pursuits for about six years at Broadiiolds, and then purchased on estate at yTai Tapu, where he engaged in mixed farming. The late Mr Macartney always took a prominent interest in local affairs, and spent much time and labour ' in working fur the advancement of Tai Tapu. For a long period ho was chairman of the old Tai Tapu Road Board, and he was one of the fo'inders of the Tai Tapu Ihiiry Company, and a director till the time of his death. He also took a. keen interest in politics, and Colonej the.Hon. R. H. Rhodes, M.P., had no more staunch supporter in his electorate than Mr Macartney. For some years Mr Macartney engaged in large contracts for roadmaking, etc., but latterly had devoted himself to farming. He married Miss Sutherland, who died 19 years. ago. He leaves a family of five sons and two daughters. The funeral leaves Tai Tapu to-day for the Aldington Cemetery, arriving there at 2.30 p.m. A prominent business man of Mnsterton, in the person of Mr James Elliott, died yesterday at the age of 64 years. The death is announced of Mr Terence Burton, of Constable street, Wellington. Ho was very weU known in insurance circlos,- having been for many years in the service of the Mutual Life Insurance Company, nnd for the Inst two years with the Government Life Insurance Department. He leaves a widow and four children. News has been received of the death at Rotorun, from wounds and sickness, of Lieut. Lionel Tnnsey. He was for several years in the Department of Justice, nt one time in New Plymouth, nnd was Clerk of the Court at Cromwell when ho resijmed about seven years ago nnd commenced practice as a solicitor in Olinkune. Hp always took a keen interest in snortr, nnd for several years was a football representative for Otficro FnivoTiitv. In 1915 he joined the 3rd Rifln Bricnde. nnd won his commission on the field Ho was eevorelv wounded at on Oriober 12th, 1017, and was ill till be died from the effects if tba wonnd nnd sickness. His younger brotbor. Frn-nfc. was killed at Flers in September. 1916.
