OBITUARY.

MR F. A. D. COX. Tho death of Mr Felix Arthur Douglas Cox, at Geruldine on Monday, re- ! anoves one of the earliest 6cttiurs in ■ "tho Chatham Islands, and also a veteran of tho Indian Mutiny. The ( lato Mr Cox was 78 years of age, and I had silent 60 years on tne Ciiutnams. JHo came to Christchurch last April with Mrs Cox, who was then verj ill, ami who died a week later in Timaru. Mr Cox was a son of Samuel Fortnun Cox, of Sancuord Park, Oxfordshire, wiio was a captain in. the Ist Lie Guards. The lato Mr Cox also took up a military career. Just prior to tlho outbreak of the Indian Mutiny he was attached to a native regiment, but was transferred to a British regiment cm the outbreak of tho mutiny. Ho was with the force under General Havelock that relieved Lucknow in 1857. Subsequently he was invalided home, and alterwards saw further service in India. He came to Now Zealand in 1804, and a year or two later went to tho Chatham Islands, where ho took up sheep-farming. He married miss duOiid, a member of a wellknown Chatham Islands family, and leaves- two daughters, ono of whom is Mrs fl. Bligh, of the Chathams, and four sons. The third son is at present undergoing training at Trentham Camp prior to leaving with the Reinforcements; tho other sons are engaged in sheep-farm-ing at the Chathams. Mr Cox took a very direct interest in church matters in the Chathams, and also in all local affairs. He was a Justice of tho Peace. Ho was an ardent botanist, ' and took particular interest in native plants, and corresponded with .Dr. Cockayne, Mr James Young (of the Christchuich Botanical Gardens), and others interested in tho flora of the Dominion and its outlying islands. His anlv brother is Mr C Percy Cox, of "To Whare," Hereford street, Christchuich. Ihe funeral took place yesterday afternoon at the Linwood cemetery, tho Rev. P. J. Cocks conducting tho , burial service.
