OBITUARY.

MR J. L. SCOTT.

Mr J. L. Scott, a very well-known resident of Christchurch, died yesterday evening. For some time past Mt Scott waa in indifferent health, and a little while back was atoicted with a stroke. From this he never recovered.

The late Mr Scott was known throughout tho Dominion as a prominent and successful business man of Christchurch, also as one who took a real and valued interest in local affairs. He was born in Derby, England, in 1848, and was educated partly at the Wesleyan School and'partly at 'public schools, afterwards taking up the engineering profession. He came to Lyttelton by the ship ...amsay in 1870, and twelve months after his arrival he started business with his brother, Mr George Sc<">tt, and established the engineering firm of Scott Bros. He was a member of -the old, Sydenham Borough Council, and also sat; on the City Council for nearly ten years. He was also for a number of years a member of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College, and his services were of great value to the Board in connection with the School of Engineering. He assisted in the formation of the technical classes conducted under the auspices of the Canterbury Industrial' __ssociation, of which he was also a member of long standing, and. was one of the early mc- bers of;the Board of Managers oi 'the v-'hristohurch Technical College. Ho was also a prominent member of tho Canterbury Employers' Association. His abilities as an engineer and as a business organiser received widespread recognition, and for some time he discharged the responsible duties of Commissioner of the New Zealand Kailwavs. He took considerable interest in Masonic affairs, and was a member ot th_ St. Augustine Lodge. He was married just before he left; England to a daughter of the late Mr Thomas St. Clair, of London, and leaves one son and four daughter-.
