STREET NAMING.

CHANGES DECIDED ON

The matter of making changes in the names of a number of city streets came before the City Council again on Monday night.

The Linwood' Citizens' Association wrote asking th© Council to refrain from altering ItoHeston street to Seymour street. A petition objecting to the proposed change was (presented. A deputation of four waited on the Council regarding the proposed alteration to the names of Fitzgerald ami Bealey streets.

The Mayor said the best thing to do nvould be to change the names cf the avenues to North, South, and East avenues. The whole trouble arose on account of the duplication of names as applied to the belts. Th. change in names mace by the Council about six years ago was really invalid. Cr, Hyde moved:—"That Rolleston avenue should be called' West avenue." Cr. Cooper seconded the motion. Cr, Dbugall moved an amendment:— "That the matter should be referred back to the committee." The Council, he said, seemed to have no mind, of ita own on the matter, and lie was absolutely "disgusted with .the methods of the Council in the treatment of some Of the things that came before it. The committee had been dealing with the matter of changes in street names for many months, but the Council seemed ready at once to change its mind with tho arrival of each fresh deputation. If the Council wished to perpetuate the names of the men who had made their mark in Canterbury in the past, they should do it in a manner that would be a credit to them. The city did that when it named the four avenues, and there was no comparison between the avenues and the streets proposed to be given the names already borne by the avenues. Cr. Otley seconded the amendment. Cr. C. D. Morris said he could not see why there should be any confusion between the streets and the avenues. He did not think there was the slightest occasion for any change at all, and he would move later on that the present titles should be retained. Th© Mayor said that out of thirtysix alterations proposed only three had been objected to. The names of about seventy-two streets had been affected altogether, for tho different Road Boards, at tho request of the Council, had effected alterations in street names in their districts. The amendment was then put and lost, and Cr. Morris then proposed a further amendment in the direction he had indicated. The Mayor held that th© proposed amendment was out of order in that it was a direct negative to the original motion. Cr. Hyde then withdrew his motion by and Cr. Morris proposed a motion:—"That tho name of Rolleston street should be retained." The motion was then put and carried. Cr. Morris then proposed a similar motion in respect of Bealey and. Fitzgerald streets. This motion was also carried. A petition was received in favour of the retention of the name of Canal Reserve. Cr. Cooper pro,po_e_ :—"That the request should be _"ceded' to, and' that the name Canal Reserve should be retained." Cr. Hoirley __id that the proposed change would only affect that part of the Canal Reserve in the city area. The other part would ntill retain its old name. The jnotion was then withdrawn by consent. A special order was then passed, maKing the following changes: CENTRAL WARD. Present name. jy_w iiame.
