MR PETER DUNCAN

The death occurred on Sunday of one of the pioneer ironmasters of Canterbury, in the person of Mr Peter Dunran, who, up till a few yeare ago, was head of the well-known implement manufacturing firm of P. and I>. Duncan, Limited, failing health being the cause of his retirement. The late Mr Duncan, who was born in Forfarshire, Scotland, in 1838, • arrived in Christchurch in 1863, and in 1866 set up in bi-siivess at his trade as a blacksmith in a tiny establishment approached by the right-of-way connecting Cashel and Lichfield streets, in the vicinity ot Messrs Beath and Co.'s premises. A year later Mr Duncan's elder brother (the late Mr David Duncan) arrived from Scotland and joined him in partnership. Subsequently the business was removed to its present location in Tuam street, and later floated into a limited liability company, with Mr P. Duncan as managing director. Tlie deceased gentleman was a kindly, upright, devout Scot, loyal to the best traditions of his country, a sterling citizen and a model husband and father. He was closely identified from the earliest times with St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, and up to the time of his death he and Mr W. Gavin were the sole surviving representatives of the original officebearers. The la to Mr Duncan also assisted greatly the welfare of the Canteibury Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and in former years was an enthusiastic volunteer, taking part. a« sergeant in the- Engineers, in the historic Battle of Hillsborough. He is survived by a widow, ono daughter and fcur sons (Messrs J. R., N. X., J. F.. and N. M. Duncan). The funern' leaves the residence.
