RE-NAMING THE BELTS.

■ — *» ■ The re-naming of the Belts that surround tho central ward of Christchurch, a matter -that was mentioned before th* amalgamation of the...bore-jell*, with the city, was brought up.at-the meetiug of the City Council last night by Cr. Gray, who soferred to the anomaly of » city baring "belts" within its boundaries- Re moved —" That the North, South, and East Belt?, and that portion of Antigua street between Armagh street and the Hospital bridge, be re-named after the four superintendents of trw province." He *uggest<>d that tlie North .Belt should be called ikaley Avenue, Mr Bealey having owned some property in that locality; the East Belt, Rolleston Avenue, Mr Rolleston having- retided in Linwood; the portion of Antigua street to be re-named should be called Moorhouse Avenue, his statue being in the public garden*, and tl* South Belt should be called Fit* Gerald Avenue. Cr. Hudfield seconded the motion, and referred to the desirability of the streets being made worthy of the names they wero to be given. Cr. Beswick thought . " Moorhouse Avenue" -would bo a more appropriate name for the South Belt, being near the railway, and the nearest portion of the city to the tunnel. Or. Gray concurred in this suggestion, and said that the name "FitzGerald Avenue" could bo applied to the portion of Antigua street to be re-named. Tho Idayor said that whilst in favour of the proposal, he thought aa. opportunity should be given the public to make suggestions on the subj-?ct. The discussion was adjourned.
