Twenty-three started, including American, French, Australian and English representatives. Betting—4 to 1 agst St. Bris, 100 to 7 Merman.

Jacobus acted as pacemaker till half a mile from home, where St. Cloud was leading. Merman then drew to the front. The Rush came with a desperate effort, and momentarily headed Merman, but the latter gamely responded to his jockey's call, and snatched the victory in the last half-dozen strides after a punishing race. Time, 2min 39gsec. The Price of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge were among those present at the meeting. The win was a very popular one and Mrs Langtry, the owner, wins £40,000. The winner was at one time owned by Mr W. R. Wilson, the well-known sporting gentleman of Melbourne, and won several races in Victoria prior to being shipped to England, where he was purchased by Mrs Langtry, who races under the name of "Mr Jersey."
