Karl Elmar, the popular Austrian poet and dramatist, whose death has just been announced from Vienna, was known in private life as Karl Swiedack. How he obtained his pseudonym of Elmar is an amusing story. In early life he was a private soldier in the 2nd Artillery Regiment, and contributed an amusing sketch of " Life in a Bombardier Corps" to a Viennese annual, which he signed "Elmar." The editor thought proper to place his real name in brackets after this signature.
