"DISCIPLINE MUST BE MAINTAINED."
Karl Elmar, the popular Austrian poet and dramatist, whose death has just been announced from Vienna, was known in private life as Karl Swiedack. How he obtained his pseudonym of Elmar is an amusing story. In early life he was a private soldier in the 2nd Artillery Regiment, and contributed an amusing sketch of " Life in a Bombardier Corps" to a Viennese annual, which he signed "Elmar." The editor thought proper to place his real name in brackets after this signature. Two days after the appearance of the magazine Private Swiedack was summoned to the presence of the captain of his company, you," shouted the officer, as the trembling private appeared before him, "you are the miserable iuk-slLnger who has written this;" and he flung the paper on the table. " Don't you know that you are Infringing the regulations! This time I will not punish you; but let mc see your name in print once more, and 1 Right-about-face, march!" And Swiedack was glad to leave the presence of the choleric captain. In the evening he was eenfc for again by the officer, whom he found still with the annual before him, but evidently in a very different mood. "Sweidack," he said, as a smile came over his face, " I have read this thing. It is not at all bad. I shouldn't mind reading the sequel; but —don't let mc see your name in print again. ,, "Then the Herr Captain thinks " "I think nothing," interrupted the Captain; "mark that well; you can go. Swiedack took the hint. The remainine; sketches appeared signed " Elmar" simply.
