The Town Clerk reported that he tad received the following sums during the w«k: — General city rate, 1872, £108 m.'ikariri do, £21 13s fid ; lines from the Resident Magistrate's Court, £1 loajwood kerbing Durham street, £(> 7s 2d ; scavenging " account, -X.& 13s 5d ; N. S. delivered, £15s; kerosene licenses, £I ; rent from Market' place, 7s ; total during tin; week, £14!) 8g 7d. The overdraft at the Bank on the genera! city account was stated as being £15] 13s 2d. The drainage account was stated to be in credit to the amount of 4!.'i528 Is 4d. Accounts to the amount of £278 10a 3d were passed, and ordered to v«e paid. REVISION COURT. His Worship the MAYOR stated that s Revision Court would be held on Wednesday next, and that the revising officers, Messrs Wilson and Duncan, would attend on the % - occasion. CATHEDRAL SQUARE. FINANCE. Cr. Jameson (chairman of finance cm mittee) said he wished to call the attention of the Council to the fact that their finances would not allow of their going on at th? I same rate of expenditure as they had during f the past few weeks, as the finance committee had gone carefully over the items of assets and expenditure, and had come to tive conclusion that a rigid economy must be escrcificd. They had therefore to rccommenii that the number of the laborers employed , by the works committee be reduced to tie former number. CITY SURVEYOR'S REPORT. The City Surveyor report was then readai follows : —" Plans and specificittions will be laid before you this evening £or No. 2 section of the New Drainage Works, from fifty-two chains from Christenurch to the second mile from Christ-church (about 103 chains). Advertisements have been placed in the papers to allow of tenders being sent in by August 26th. Specifications will be laid before you for 90,000 feet of heart cf totara timber; tenders for this would also bo sent in by Monday, August 26th. Plans and specifications for the proposed alterations to . the Cathedral square roadway will also be laid before you this evening. The works' \ committee recommend that stone channeling \ be laid down in the following places, viz., in f Colombo street, west side, from Lichfield f street to Tuam street, and in Lichfield street, from the Oddfellows' Hall to Manchester [ street. The labor gang has been eraplojed . carting shingle, &c, aud earth for theArmagb street bridge, fixing wood kerbing inDurhsa street, forming footpath in Antigua street, levelling on North town belt, clearing oat side drains, scraping streets, repairing streets ( with shingle, and other small works. The report of the Surveyor, as a whoie, was approved. REDUCTION OF EXPENSES. Cγ. Jameson moved—" That with a riew to economise, the works committee be re , quested to discontinue the extra labor placed at their disposal some time ago." Cr. Bishop seconded the motion, which was agreed to. CATHEDRAL SQUARE ROADWAY. Cγ. Haet mo-red—•' That this Council approves of the plan now laid on the table for ■ the alteration of the Cathedral square roadway, and that the Town Clerk be instructed , to give the proflfcr notices according to the Amended Municipal Corporations Act, 1871." Cr. Calvert seconded the motion, whica was carried, Cr. Bishop only dissenting. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from the Town Clerk « Kaiapoi, stating that the Kaiapoi Boroaga Council would co-operate with the CAJ Council is endeavoring to alter and ameß« the present Municipal Corporations Act. A similar letter was read from the_ To#n Council of Wanganui, expressing their w' linguess to co-operate with the Christchnrctt Council in the matter. A telegram was also read from the Mayor of Auckland, stating that he vras in "»' ; lington endeavoring to get amendments in j the Corporations Act passed, and asking w j. whom the Christchurch City Council wonM J refer him to in Wellington for information. To the latter telegram his Worship tM Mayor (H. Sawteli, Esq.), replied «»' the Act being a general one, he won? not recommend any alteration flow after consultation with the leading corporations of the colony, nor did «c (the Mayor) think it would at 811.°* possible to get any amendment made durmg this present session of the General &£&»' ~ bly. A letter was read from Mrs M. Hawdon- j suggesting that the road facing the la : between the College bridge aud the UrllM should be called " Hagley Park road.' , A lctcur was read from Mr T. Culvert's notice t motion on this subject should be cousidd in connection with these letters. . Cr. The Council regretted that they could not comply with the request, all the surplus earth being required Sirs Mary Virtue forwarded a letter to the Council complaining that the reserve of the Council, near Woolston, had got broken, and thit a north-west wind brought over the soil onto her garden. She therefore asked permission to plant the broken places with willow cuttings to prevent its further drifting. The request was granted. BEPOBT OF KATE COLLECTOR. The Bate Collector reported that he would complete the leaving of the first applications j end would commence to leave the second applications for rates during the week. The report was approved. LICENSES. In application was received from Walter Bartnell for a license for a hackney carriage, rnnning from Post-office to Ferry bridge. The application was granted. An application was received from James Kane, for a driver's license, which, on the report of the Inspector, was refused by the Council. J The Council then adjourned.
