MR ALAN STEWART'S CAREER ACADEMIC AND SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS i Mr Alan Stewart, only son of' Mr and Mrs K. Stewart, of Hillcrest, selected as one of this year's Rhodes Scholars, is years of age. He received his primary education at the St. Heliers', Northcote and Whakatane Schools, and gained It is proficiency certificate while still under eleven years of age. After being awarded a junior national scholarship at the Whakatane District High School, Mr 'Stewart passed the university entrance examination, and in the same year was awarded a

higher leaving certificate. During 1934 and 1935 he attended the Mt. Albert Grammar School, taking a spc cial agricultural course. In each year he was awarded a university national bursary and a higher leaving certificate. In the scholarship examinations of 19134 and 1935, he received second highest marks for agriculture in the Dominion list of scholarship awards, and successfully applied for an agricultural bursary. '

In 1936 Mr Stewart took lectures at Auckland University College for the intermediate section of the course leading to the degree of bachelor of agricultural science, # and passed in all subjects. The next year he began his first professional lectures at Massey Agricultural College. tic passed the full section in the university examination and was awarded the Lord Bledisloe Prize for the highest marks among the firstyear degree students. In 1939 Mi Stewart gained his bachelor of agri--cultural science degree and has com pleted the examinations for M.Ag.Sc. For the. highest marks in professional examinations, he was this year conjointly awarded the senior scholarship in agriculture for 19-10.

The Field of Sport,

At Mt.. Albert Grammar School, Mr Stewart Avas a member of the first fifteen and first swimming team for one year and a member of the first eleven for two years, being captain in the last season. He also took part in boxing and athletics. At Auckland University College, he pla3 r ed for the Auckland junior representative Rugby team. At Massey College, Mr Stewart took an active part in football, swimming, tennis and athletics. He was.a member of the college football team for four years, being club and team captain for two years. He represented the Manawatu Rugby Union for three years, being eaptain on three/occasions and was nominated for the All Black trial? in 1939. During 1939 and 1940, in which year he was vice-captain, Mr Stewart was also a member of the North Island Universities' football team, representing the New Zealand University this year and thus obtaining his 'blue.'

During the last two years, he has been joint holder of the Massey College tennis doubles championship and has been awarded representative honours in this sport. For two years he Avas college swimming champion, being awarded a college' 'blue' after having competed with success in the Manawatu provincial swimming championships. He has played senior cricket in Palmerston North and is the present holder of

the college 100 yards sprint and 120 yards high hurdles championships.
