HEARTS V. CORSETS.
Commenting on Lady Wilde's recent pronouncement on the subject of dress, Hearlh and Home says: — As to the " full impulses of a passionate heart " being capable of depression merely through the physical compression of a . corset, we cannot really agree with Lady Wilde. Were this the case we should have a remedy at hand for many evils which good men have deplored for centuries. The full impulses of passionate hearts have led to the ruin of many lives, and some of us would be truly glad if we could conquer, or even merely " depress," our passion by the simple and economical method of popping on a tight corset. A small waist and a strict and rigorous life would then go together, and at every j inch that we took in, the path of virtue would be more easy to tread. Rash and imprudent marriages might be j almost entirely put a stop to, and when foolish girls gave their mothers ' trouble at balls by obeying their full ! impulses, and dancing five times running wrth the same inpecunious young man, the said mothers wonld simply take the naughty maidens to the J cloakroom, lace them a little tighter and then be sure of their future obedience and discreet behaviour.
