ESSENCE OF PARLIAMENT.
• ♦ LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Tuesday. Petitions in favour of France annexing the New Hebrides and also of reading the Bible in State schools were presented. The Hon. Mr Buckley, in reply to Mr Bonar, said the Government had given £50 this year towards the funds of the Royal Humane Society of Australasia. Sir F. Whitaker moved the resolutions standing in his name, that the colony shonld withdraw all opposition to the acquisition by France of the .New Hebr.des group on condition that France guaranteed religious freedom and peaceable possession of their rights to British subjeots. The debate was adjourned till Friday. The Address to the Queen, re annexing the Kermadecs, was agreed to. Wednesday. A motion by the Hon. Mr Chamberlin " That the Government take some steps to devise means to lessen coastal wrecks," was lost. The Hon. Dr Menzies moved the second reading of the Bible-in-Schools Bill. A number of members strongly opposed the motion, which was, however, carried by 20 votes to 17.
