HOPMAN DEFEATS GENTIEN. I QUIST AND TURNBULL GO DOWN. PARIS, May 27. Additional results in the third round of the men's singles in the French lawn tennis championships on Saturday: — Boussus beat Turnbull (Australia), 2—6, 4—6, 6—4, 6—2, 6—3; A. Merlin beat Quist (Australia), 6—l, 6—4, 6—4; Menzel (Cz«cho-Sl'ovakia), beat Berthet (France), 6—2, 6—3, 6—3; Artens (Austria) beat Losueur (France), B—6. 6—4, 12—10; Hopman (Australia) beat Gentien. 6 —2, 7—5 6—3; McGrath (Australia) beat Tloczynski (Poland), 4—6, 6—4, I—6, 6—o, 6—2.

Turnbull made a bravo show against Boussus, but had bad luck. When two games stood between him and victory the linesman recorded as a good ball one from Boussus which flew beyond the baseline. This faulty decision gave the critical eighth game to the Frenchman, who afterwards retained the initiative.

McGrath found the Polish player in brilliaut form in the early stages of their match. The former would have bsen beaten had not be accepted the advice' of his fellow Australians and slowed play. He won the last two sets with the loss of only two games.

A. Merlin (the French Davis Cup representative), playing superlatively, decisively beat Quist, who tried all he knew to get the Frenchman out of position, but Merlin returned shots that seemingly were impossible.

Mixed Doubles.—First round: Crawford and 'Miss Scriven beat Troncin and Mile. Iribarne, 6—2, 6—2; Von Cramm and Miss Horn beat McGrath and Miss Hartigan, 6—4, 6—3; Borotra and. Mile. Rosambert beat Malfroy and Miss Hardwick. C—4, 7—5.

JAPS. EXCEL IN SURREY.

LONDON, May 27. In the final of the singles in the Surrey tennis championship on Saturday Yamagishi (Japan) beat Nishimura (Japan), 6—3, 6—3. In the semi-finals on Fridav Yamagishi defeated Mild, 6—3. 2 -6, 13 —11, and Nishimura defeated Fujikura, 6—4, 5—7, 6—4. In the doubles the final was won by Aoki and Fujikura, who beat Nishimura and Yamagishi, 6—2, 1-6, 6-4, 10-12, 6-4.
