WHISKY TORPEDOES FOR "DRY" LAND.
CLEVER SMUGGLING TRICK IN TUB GREAT LAKKS. Torpedoes laden with whisky, and fired from Canadian wnters to the American side of the Great Lakes, is the latest device for evading the dry laws in the United States. Discovery of the trick was made by Major A. V. Dalrymple, Prohibition Inspector for the States of Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Cruising in a revenue cutter along the shore of 'Lake Michigan, near Chicago, with the idea of getting a little relief from the stifling heat of the city, the major had his attention directed to two men Id h motorboat, far out on the water, who appeared to be wrestling with a monstrous fish. "What do ye make o' that, major?" questioned the captain of the cutter, rubbing, his eyes and handing his binoculars to the Inspector. "Looks as if they'd caught a porpoise or a cod, only such critters don't live in the fresh waters of inland seas, so far as I know." Major Dalr.rmple gazed long and earnestly through the glasses, and suddenly became excited. -That no ftsh. Bill: it's a torpedo," he exclaimed. "How in thunder did It get loose in the lake? Let's go over and see •about It." " The captain headed the cutter as directed, but wlieo the fishermen saw it coming they dropped their catch overboard and made off at full speed. "■-"Never mind them: go after the tin I shark," ordered Dalrymple. The torpedo was in gentle motion Just below the surface, nnd left a slight wake, so that the cutter hud no trouble in intercepting it. Then it was towed ashore, where examination soon disclosed that the seemingly deadly weapon was loaded with nothiug more dangerous than ardent spirits. Thus put on the alert, the Prohibition agents and Prohibition officers have since caught several torpedoes, and. in a few" cases, the smugglers who were on the lookout for them.
