DEATH OF MR JOSEPH NEWMAN.

Mr Joseph Newman, of the firm of New man and Buttle, sharebrokers, died at his residence at Remuera early this morning, in his seventy-seventh year. Somo four months ago Mr Newman sustained serious injury through a signboard falling and striking him on the head, and this caused him to retire from business. He recovered sufficiently to visit town occasionally, but never completely survived the shock. Latterly he was very ill, and confined to his bed. Ho was attended by Drs. Lawry and Philson, and notwithstanding their best endeavours he died ab an early hour this morning. Mr Newman was one of the oldest inhabitants of Aucklaud. Ho had been in the colony for about half -a - century, and for almost the whole of thab time resided in the Auckland province. He commenced operations as a settler at Kohimarama, then moved to Remuera, and subsequently started business as an auctioneer iv Auckland city. He was in partnership with Mr Alfred 'Buckland, this line, until 1850, when he sold out to to Mr Buckland. Mr Newman then entered into partnership with Mr Walter Ewin, and the firm carried on business aa ironmongers in Shortland-street, and subsequently in Queen-street in premises now occupied by Mr 11. Atkins, draper. When the Thames goldfiold "broke out" MiNewman commenced business on his own account as a sharobroker, and in that capacity ho aotod until within a few months ago. The deceasod was a well-known public man, having always taken a prominent parb in tho furtherance of the causo of temporanco. for somo years a director of the Auckland Gas Company, and one of the trustees of the Rawlings scholarships. Ho was a member of the Provincial Council from its inception till its close, and was at ono time member for Franklin in the House of Representatives. Tho deceased leaves a wife, but no family. Tho funeral will take place on Wednesday, leaving the residence of the deceased at 3 p.m.

Mr Newman, before ho died, expressed a desire that the boys who are enjoying the benefits of tho Rawlings scholarships should follow him to tho grave, if they conveniently can, and two cabs will leave Messrs Ewingbon and Baker's office, Coornbes' Arcade, Queon-streeD, on V\ ednesday next at 2.30, to convoy such boys to tho funeral as may attend to gratify the dying wish of thoir lato friend.
