AYRSHIRE WINS.

The contest for the Derby took place at Epsom to-day, with the following result :— Renewal of the Derby Stakes of 50sovs each, h ft; colts, 9st; fillies, Bst 91b; then three-year-olds; about a mile and a half; starting at the New High Level Starting Point; the owner of the second horse to receive 300sovs, and the third 150sovs out of the stakes. 150 subs.

Ayrshire, the hero of the Two Thousand Guineas this year, has added to his reputation by pulling off the Epsom Derby, a race which it is the ambition of every English horse-owner to place to his credit. The winner comes of a great family, being by Hampton from Atalanta, by Galopin (winner of the Derby), from Heronia, by Thormanby from Woodbine, by Stockwell. He was bred by his owner, the Duke of. Portland, and out of seven starts as a two-year-old, he won no fewer than five races. Ayrshire's tirst essay was in the Whitsuntide Plate for two-year-olds, 5 furlongs, at the Manchester Whitsuntide Meeting, when, with Bst 111b up, he finished third to Briar-root, Bst 81b, who won by a head from a colt by Isonomy —Ellangowan, Bst 111b, only a neck separatting second and third ; and he filled a similar position with Bsfc 101b up in the New Stakes for two-year-olds (5 furlongs 136 yards) at the Ascot Juno Meeting, won by Friar's Balsam, Bst 101b ; Sea Breeze, 9st, in the second place. His tirst success was in the Bibury Club Homebred Foal Stakes, T.Y.C., which he won by three-quarters of a length from the Duke of Westminster's colt Challenge. The Royal Plato for two-year-olds, 5 furlongs, at the Windsor June Meeting, was his next victory, which he followed up by securing the Chesterfield Stakes, 5 furlongs, at the Newmarket July Meeting; the Prince of Wales Stakes, T.Y.C, at the Goodwood July Meeting ; and the Coampagne Stakes, 6 furlongs 152 yards, at the Doncaster September Meeting. Ayrshire has a number of valuable engagements this season, including the Prince of Wales Stakes and Hardwicke Stakes al Ascofc, and the St. Leger Stakes at Doncaster, so that he has good prospects of further distinguishing himself before the expiration of the current year, Ayrshire was trained by John Dawson, and would probably be ridden by F. Webb. An English writer, recently describing the Derby colts, said of Ayrshire :—" Looking at the whole classic entry, so far as level moulding and beauty of symmetry go, Ayrshire perhaps may be entitled to pre-eminence. He is, as to make and shape, an orthodox colt, so to say, evenly balanced and bloodlike everywhere. Reader, strike off in your mind's eye a medium between the sire, Hampton, and the dam's sire, Galopin, and you have Ayrshire, who is stronger than the Lord Clifden horse was in his youth, and slightly shorter on the leg than was .the late Prince Batthyany's idol." This is the first Derby the Duke of Portland has placed to his credit. He has been r.acing with great success this season, as in addition to the Two Thousand Guineas and Der"by he won the rich Leicestershire Handicap with Johnny Morgan, and his early two-year-olds have also been very fortunate. .•>.. :■ ■-.»•■- •.-

Crowberry, who ran second, started nine times last season, winning live races. He made his debut in the Brocklesbury Stakes at Lincoln, where he ran unplaced to Volcano. His other defeats were sustained at the hands of Bartozan (when conceding 91b) at Kempton Park, of Ayrshire, in the Champagne Stakes, where Crowberry was fourth behind Marmiton aild Caerlaverock, and of the moderate filly Cassimere, in the Sandown Sapling Plate, tha latter beating at a difference of 61b. His victories were five in number. With 101b over weight-for-age from Kilwarlin at Ascot he won in a canter by six lengths, and at York he beat Caerlaverock, receiving 31bs and Arrandale, conceding 111b, very easily. He wound up the season at Manchester by carrying oft the Lancaster Nursory with the top weight, and favourably impressed the critics by his style. Van Diemen's Land, who occupied third position, proved himself a useful two-year-old. Out of the seven starts he scored three wins, viz., the Hyde Park Plate, ab the Epsom Spring Meeting ; the Breeders' Plate,' at the Newmarket Second Spring Meeting- ; and the Stanley Stakes, at tha Epsom Saimmer Meeting.
