DEATH OF SIR GEORGE BOWEN.
LONDON, February 22. Obituary — BirGeorgoßowen, ex-Gover-nor of Now Zealand. Ho died at Brighton, of bronohitis, affor two days' illness. .Ihe Right Hon. Sir George Ferguson Bowen wns the eldest son of the late Rev. Edward Bowen, and born in 1821. He graduated B.A, in 1844, became Chief . Secretary to the Government of the lonian Islands from 1854 to 1850, and in tho lattor year was appointed tho lirßt Governor of tho new colony of Queensland. In 18G8 he was appointed Governor o£ New Zealand, and in 1878 Governor of Victoria. Ho was Governor of Mauritius from 1875 to 1883, when he was appointed Governor of Hong Kong.' Ho retired on his pension in 1887, but in 1888 ho was appointed Royal Commissioner at Malta. In 1856 he married the Countess Roma, only surviving daughter of Countßoma,G.O.M.G., then President of the Senate of the lonian Islands. Tho late Sir George was tho author of sevoral works of travel and adventure.
