The seventeen runners, with their respective riders j- were all weighed out in good time, and as- soon as the course was cleared the horses took their preliminary canters. The lot speedily passed through the paddock, and on arriving at the post Mr M* George- despatched them at once to an excellent start. Dodge at once took Glen Arthur to the front, and carried on the running at a fair pace, his immediate followers being Tantalus, Brown Prince, Thunderstone, and Touchet ; then, at a slight interval, came Altyre and Rob Roy, with Silvio at the head of the next division, the rear being brought up by Covenanter and Lady Miller, who both began so slowly that they were soon out of the race. Passing theough the furzes Glen. Arthur increased his lead. and. close at his heels in a body came Brown Prince, Rob Roy, Tantalus; and Thunderstone ; these were followed by Chamant, Touchet, Silvio, and Altyre at the head of the ruck. As they came clown the hill, Rhidorrock and Silvio both improved their positions, Glen Arthur still holding a clear lead of his field. "When fairly in the line for home, Mr BevilPs outsider took fourth -place next the rails, and Touchet on the whip hand began to draw on the leaders, with Rob Roy and Chamant lying well up. The next division consisted of Thunderstone, who ran very unkindly, and Silvio, both together, a length in front of Brown Prince, Altyre, Grey Friar, and Tantalus. Three furlongs from home, Chamant for an instant raised the hopes of his backers, but he quickly retired, and before the distance was reached P. Archer on Silvio had joined Glen Arthur, whom he deprived of the lead at the enclosure and won cleverly, after a good race, by half a length ; Rob Roy, who had hung a good deal, finished three-quarters of a length behind the second. Rhidorroch was beaten a head for third place. Altyre was fifth, Brown Prince sixth, Thunderstone seventh, Touchet eighth, Grey Friar ninth, and Chamant next. The last lot were Covenanter, Tantalus, and Jagellon. Orleans walked in with the crowd. The duration of the race as ascertained by Benson's chronograph was 2min. 50sec. ; time last year, 2min. 44sec.
