The Mauawatu meeting will be continued on Monday, when the Manawatu Cup will be decided. The local horse Osiris is sure of a large following, and with 8.1 on his back is expected to run well. Kuight Commander, a recent addition to W. Garrett's stable, has broken down. Another of Garrett's team —Saudix— is also on the easy list at present. No less than ten race meetings will be in progress on Monday. The vagaries of Elysian ou the training track of late cause his summer prospects to take a far from satisfactory form. Iv the early spring the son of Soult showed a tendency to stick upon the track; but his behaviour at that period was of the mildest order compared with some of his displays of late. The stiff racing oxacted from Elysian may have played a part in developing those qualities which threaten to tell against him. One thing that can be said for Elysiau is that he has always behaved well wheu the silk is up, aud that he has finished as straight as a gun barrel when the whip has been brought out in a stirring finish. The nominations received for the Wellington Racing Club's meeting next mouth eclipse all past records. For the twenty races there is a grand total of 711—or an average of over 35 per race. Nearly every stable of prominence in the Dominion is represented, and the Club is to be heartily congratulated on the result. As usual, Wairarapa horses figure largely in the entries. The Summer Handicap has again drawn the largest [ eutry, but both the Wellington Cup and the Consolation Handicap have drawu over 50 horses, while the Racing Club Handicap and the Douro Cup have filled with 51 and 49 nominations respectively and several other races have received over 40. Handicapper Pollock has a busy time before him. His adjustments for the Wellington Cup and Telegraph Haudicap may be expected about (sth January. One result of the Government proposals for further taxation on the sport iof horse racing will make itself felt at ■ the approaching meeting of the Wairarapa Racinp Club, inasmuch astlie ad mission prices to the saddling paddock, grandstand and lawn have been advanced by 2s 6d. The prices are now 5s for ladies and 10s for gentlemen.

Jockeys who learnt to ride in Australia or New Zealand and have gone to other countries have done remarkbably well. Frank Wootton topped the list of winners in Euglaud, Evaus and others left their mark in India, while Bullock beat all comers in Germany. Carslake aud Hewitt have been riding in Austria and wound up the season a close second and third respectively to the native jockey Jauek. After the acceptances for the Auckland Cup were posted, Downfall, Taskmaster, Advocate aud Diabolo ranked equal favourites, but that trio are only separated by a point from All Red, aud another point longer Sir Prizy, Koosevelt aud Ngapulia rank equal. In recognition of his success on Minoru iu~the Free Handicap at Newmarket, D. Maher was presented by King Edward with a jewelled scarfpin. L. Hewitt has contracted to ride in Austria for Prince Hohenlohe in 1910-11, at a salary of £2000 a year. While he continues to command that figure,it is improbable Hewitt will be particularly anxious to age in permanently take up his residence in Australia or New Zealand.
