THE MAYORAL ELECTION.
Tho polling for the election of Mayor • took place yesterday. There were two candidates, Messrs M'Lean Watt Jack and F. A. Learmontu, this being the first occasion for some years, when there has been a contest for the civic chair- Each of the candidates, hud previously occupied the position without opposition. Thus there was somewhat more interest taken in the result than usual, although it must be confessed that the excitement was of the mildest description. The candidates themselves worked hard, and personally interviewed the burgesses, who despite the rain which fell heavily all day, went to the poll in considerable numbers. The polling booth which was closed at six p m., and after a space of about half au hour the Town Hall doors were thrown open, and the Returning Officer Mr W. D. Banks announced the following as the result of the poll :— - M'Lean Watt Jack ... 153 F. A. Leannonth 96
