At the first attempt a capital start was effected, the lot running in an unbroken me for some strides, when Athol Lad drew in front; but he was immediately pulled back, and Sefton went on in advance, attended on the stand side by Insulaire, -while at his quarters on the near side was Athol Lad, level with whom lay Pilgrimage on the off side of Insulaire. This lot was followed by Childeric, Glengarry, and the Hope colt; while in the extreme rear was Inval, They ran almost in a line before they began to scatter, the first to break the uniformity being Glengarry, who retired from the front before reaching the T.T.O. starting post, at which point the Hope colt and Bayonet were also hopelessly beaten. The deFcent of the hill found out the weak places in Athol Lad, Childeric, and Oasis, who were all beaten before reaching the Abingdon mile bottom. Here Insulaire and Pilgrimage raced up to Sefton, whom they immediately headed, Mr Crawford's colt being beaten as they rose the hill, where Insulaire was half a length in front. Pilgrimage, however, tackled the incline in a most resolute manner, and depriving Insulaire of the lead half-way up the hill, won cleverly by half a length. Sefton was third, a length and a half behind Insulaire, then came Childeric, half a dozen lengths off, fourth ; Oasis fifth, a length

behind him ; Glengarry and Inval next, finishing together ; a long way behind being Atbol Lad, the Hope colt, and Bayonet., Time, lmin 56sec. The course was very heavy, owing to continued rain. Pilgrimage was sold last year for 190 guineas to her present owner, arid she has since won £11,000 for him in stakes alone.
