TN pursuance of the provisions of an Act -*- of the General Assembly of New Zealand intituled " The Regulations of Elections Act, 1858," and in pursuance of the provisions of an Act of the General Assembly of New Zealand intituled "The County of Westland Act, 1867," I, Gerard George FitzGerald, Returning Officer for the Electoral District of the town of Hokitika, do hereby give notice that by virtue of a Writ bearing date the thirtieth day of October, 1868, issued under the hand of the Honorable James Alexander Bonar, an election will be held for the return of a qualified person to serve as a member of the Council for the County of Westland for the said Electoral District, in the room of John Randal Carey, Esquire, resigned ; and that the nomination of Candidates will take place at the Warden's Court, Ilokitika, at twelve o'clock noon, on Thursday, the fifth day of November, 1868", alltt that the poll, if necessary, will be taken on Friday, the sixth day of November, 1868. FTIHE following Regulations, approved by the' Governor in Council, are published for general information. By His Excellency's Command, THOS. D. CHAPMAN. Memorandum of Regulations under the Act 20 Victoria, No. 6, respecting the Payment of a Reward for tho discovery of a profitable Groldfield in Tasmania. 1. The area of a Gold-field not to exceed eight thousand acres to entitle the discoverer to tlid Reward under the Act. 2. No Gold-field shall be deemed profitable within the meaning of the Act unless it is proved to the satisfaction' of the Governor in Council that such Gold-field has yielded not less than an average of one hundred ounces a week for a period for twelve months. 3. All claims for the discovery of a Gold-field under the Act to be registered at the Colonial Secretary's Office. 4. The Claimant will require to furnish full particulars, at the time of registry, with respect to the locality in which the discovery was made, and the measured distance of the spot (if practicable) from some known })oint; al so the conditions under which the Gold was found (whether alluvial or otherwise); the quantity ob-' taincd, and the amount of labour and time expended in the search. 5. The Claimant will be required to lodge a sample of the Gold obtained, not exceeding an oiince, at the Colonial Secretary's Office, at the time of registry. 6. The Claim for the Reward shall continue in force for a period of two years, after which tho individual right ceases ; but it shall bo competent for the Governor in Council to renew such Claini, if additional discoveries are made, so as to give a full period of two years from the date of such additional discovery. 7. No Claim to exceed an area of eight thousand acres, or a radius of two miles. 8. In the case of several parties prospecting within the area prescribed for a Gold-field, and making distinct and separate discoveries therein, the Governor in Council shall have power to define the boundaries within which their several claims extend, according to the extent of their operations, and the physical and geological features of the country. 9. If any dispute arise as to who is or are the discoverer or discoverers of any Gold-field, or as to the manner in which the said Reward shall be distributed in case there are more discoveries than one, then, and in every such case, the Governor in Council shall appoint three persons to hear and determine such disputes ; and the decisions of such persons shall be final and conclusive. 10. The following shall be the scale of the Rewards under the Act to bo paid for the discoveiy of a profitable Gold-field iv Tasmania, which fulfils the conditions prescribed in these Regulations ; viz. — £ 1000 for a Gold-field yielding 100 ozs. weekly. 2000 ditto 150 ditto. 3000 ditto 200 ditto. 4000 ditto 300 ditto. 5000 ditto 400 ditto.
