Election Notice. TO WILLIAM .SHAW, -ESQ., Weld Street, Hokitika. QJIR, — As the time 'approaches for the election of members to form the Municipal Council, we desire that early measures be taken to secure your election, should you consent to •be nominated. We are confident that the interests of the town will not suffer in your hands. Your long experience in business, both in this Colony and in Victoria, is a guarantee that, if elected, the various Municipal matters brought before you will be dealt with in a practical manner. Difficulties of a peculiar nature will arise in the first sittings of the Council : we are confident these difficulties will be more easily surmounted, if the council be composed^ of gentlemen like yourself, possessing very considerable experience in the formation of new settlements and districts. June 16,1866.. p ENTLEMEN,~I feel myself highly * flattered by the Requisition you have presented me with, to offer myself as : a candidate for a seat in the Municipal Council of Hokitika. My experience and ability I feel sure you over-estimate ; but such as they are I place them at the dis- - posal of the electors, should, they confer upon me the. honorable distinction of being one of their representatives. I cannot but regard with deep interest the great responsibility that may, and most probably will, devolve upon the first Council that will be selected to represent this long neglected and misgoverned district. Independent 6f the ordinary business of a Municipal Council, occasions may arise when- it may be necessary for that body, as the only recognised representative institution here,-tos embody the spirit and independence of the people who have cast their fortunes in this country, and manfully to insist upon a full measure of justice for them. , I may here mention, with regard to the late contest between Mr W. S. Moorhouse and myself for the* representation of , Westland in the General Assembly, that no one" can be better pleased at my defeat ihan I am myself, and that I sincerely rejoice at the return of my opponent, who at the time, was a stranger to most of us, but in whom I recognise an able and staunch advocate of our common interests, and through whom, with the aid of a respectable and influential Council, Hokitika cannot fail to advance. I am, Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, William: Shaw. To Messrs Reeves and Co., Fisher Bros., Anderson and Mowat, Louttit, Reid, and ? Co., A. Boyle and Co., Hawkes and Strouts, and the other gentlemen who signed the requisition. ' .Weld-street, June 18th. Hokitika, Sept. 16, 1866. • Referring to the foregoing Requisition and Reply, I beg leare tp intimate to the inhabitants of Hokitika, that I am still a candidate for the office of Councillor in the now municipality. * Wm. Shaw.
