The retirement of Mr O'Callaghan from the representation of Lincoln creates a vacancy which the friend of the Hon. William Eolleston are desirous that gentleman should contest.- Of those mentioned up to the prasent as probable candidates for the seat, Mr Kolleston is head and shoulders above the whole of them, and the electors of Lini coin will be wise if they secure the services of one of the most conscientious and able public men that have taken part in tho management of the colony's affairs. Mr fiolleston is in the fullest and truest sense of the word a Liberal — as witness his laud laws, especially that enacting the deferred payment and perpetual leasing systems, by which the working men of the colony have had the chance to get land, which they could not have done prior to Mr Rolleston's time, .As Superintendent of Canterbury he did yo'eman's service for that province, which had just before had the services of the late , William .Moorhouse, to whom Mr Holleston was a most capable successor. The return to public life of a man of Mr Eollestpn's great capacity would be hailed with satisfaction all over the colony, and by tho leading men on both sides of the House,' whore his strong common sense and widespread knowledge were highly appreciated. His Parliamentary career has been interrupted by one of those freaks of an unthinking majority, of which there were three regrettable examples during the last general election, and from which the colony is still suffering. We cannot spare such men aa Messrs Rolleston, Byrcc, and Stout from Parliament, especially when those replacing them are so far below them in ability and general qualities, and every thinking person in New Zealand would be pleased to see all three back in Parliament once more, as their absence therefrom has been greatly felt. We trust that the Lincoln electors will lead the way and return Mr Bolleston, and show the rest of the colony that the great public services of Mr Bolleston in the past are not forgotten, and that wiser counsels are beginning to hold sway. The return of Mr Eolleston to his old post as Minister of Lands would be a great boon, as the present occupant .of that office has failed to satisfy public expectations, as tie has to a great extent contented himself with a latesex faire policy, and that too at a time when a vigorous and liberal policy should have been adopted and carried out. . There is a great and unsatisfied demand for land for settlement, but- the present Minister of Lands does hot put himself about: to satisfy it. The sooner some more go-ahead person relieves him of his portfolio the better — is the general opinion.
