THE NEW LIBERAL PARTY.
A FRESH POLITICAL ELEMENT.
A meeting has been held in Christchurbh at which there Vere present several members of Parliament ; and other, representatives of the Liberal Party from various parts of the colony. Several members of the Liberal side of the House telegraphed regretting their inability to be present, and expressing approval of the objects of the conference. Two lengthy sessions were held, at which the present position of tho Liberal Party and 'its prospects at the coming general election were fully, discussed. With a view 'io securing .constitutional reforms, improved ' administration of the colony's affairs, arid a. Sfife, definite, and progressive policy for submission to the electors at the approaching general election, it was resolved to organise a,new party, under -ue title of " The New Liberal Party." The details of a programme, after bjeirie discussed at length, were determined jfpon. With a view of meeting the convenience of those who were unable to be present, the conference will iheet again at an early date to arrange; the details of a colonial campaign. It wae determined to vigorously contest the next general election in the interests of the hew organisation;
Inquiries mad© in the town to-day have failed to elicit any definite information concerning the actual policy of the new league or the absolute planks of its platform. The presence in town of Mr W. H. Barber, M.H.R. for Newtown, and of Mr Bedford, senior itfember for Duriedin, leads, however, to ihe belief that they are associated with 'the movement. These gentlemen are known to have been in conference with Mr T. E. Taylor and Mr H..G. Ell, so that it is probable that the new ©arty will be comprised mainly of those members who, while supporting a Liberal and progressive policy' generally, are not necessarily eye to eye with the present administration.
