« ; • / Mr Alfred William Chatfield, late engineer of the Union Company's steamer Wanaka, and a son of Captain Chatfield, who recently retired from the company's service, died from pneumonia at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney, last Wednesday. Deceased, who was very popular with the officers and crews of' the company's fleet, leaves a wifo and family, resident at Dunedin. Mr Watkin 'Mill*,, accompanied by Mr Parlovitz and Mr Spencer Jones, left by the express train for the south this morning. Mr Roserithal, of Wellington, was a. passenger for the south to-day. Messrs P. M. Thomson, A. R. C. Kilian and A. Grant left Chrietchurch for the fiouth to-day, and Mr Scales left by the express for the north. Mr Fras&r (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Keith (Wellington), Mr- Hunter (Wellington), Mr and Mrs Langland (England), and Mr Rolkenbeck are among the visitors to Christchurch. Tho Hon J. Marshall,' M.L.C.,^lr T. Mackenaie, M.H.R., and Mr F. ~ d* C. Malet, arrived from Wellington by the s.s. Mokoia this morning. The following . passengers have been booked for Wellington by the s.s. Monowai, leaving this evening: — Mesdames Cloggie, Salter, Andrews, "Geoway,. Fair^ hurst, Duncan, Curtis, and' M'Bride, Misses WiHs, Phillips^ Andrews, Dobson and Dunn, 'Messrs W. Croft, H. J. Taylor, W. Robin-son, Smith, Word, Fairhurst, Dunoariv W. G. Bright, Curtic, ' M* Bride, Libburn, Evans, Tate and P. Campbell. - The death is announced of Mrs J. Newby, a lady Who was known end respected- by many residents of Chris-tchurcn: She came to the colony, in 1867, yith her then .'husbandt the "late Mr M. B. Hart, wiho. was aj prominent citizen same thirty years, ago, and was twice Mayor of Christohurch. "Some time aifter ibis deaih, she married' Mr Newby, whom. she' also survived-. .By her first marriage she had a iamily 'of five daughter^, all of /vhom are married, and one son. The funeral will take place m Sunday, at the Barbadoes Street. Cemetery.
