THE BY-ELECTION. ♦

A meeting of Mr Charles Taylor's supporters was heid in the Trades Hall last evening, when Mr J. M'CuHough was elected to the chair, and there was a large attendance- of friends- and supporters. A strong committee was formed, and the utmost enthusiasm was ehown. The executive was appointed', with Mr J. ©. Tayloi as general secretary. The Labour candididate will address the electors at an early date. A large meeting of Mr G. J. Smiths friends -and supporters was held in Trinity Hall, Manchester Street, laisb night. Mr W. Millar, of Sydenham, was voted to the chair. Mr Smith explained that lie had called the meeting because Mr T. E. Taylor had announced his intention nofc to stand for the vacant seat. A great number of friends had approached him on. the matter, and bafore he couldi give a decision, he wanted to have a talk with them. Mr T. E. Taylor addressed the meeting, urging several reasons why Mr Smith should contest the election. A resolution, asking Mr Smith to allow himself to be nominated, was moved by Mr R. M. Speirs, and seconded by Mr F. W. Sandfoa-d, and, after being supported by several speakers, was oaxried unanimously. Mr Smithi ac- ! cepted fihe resolution, a>nd imvitedi tb& meieting to scrutinise his six years 1 service in the- House, and if that had! been -satisfactory, he would assure 'them that, if elected, his future services would be equally so. An executive committee, of about twenty ladies and gentlemen was them formed, of wihich Mr J. A. Fleshier was elected chiair?man, and Mr W. Dobbs secretary. Booms have, been engaged from W. 3.
