MR J. MACKINTOSH.

Mr James Mackintosh, ex-M.H.R. for Wallace, and an old Southland settler, died on Sunday. Born at Lochinver, Sutherlandshire, Scotland, he emigrated to Victoria while quite a young man, and, with his brother Murdoch, took up an estate at Moonee Ponds— now practically a suburb of Melbourne — where the brothers gained a reputation as breeders of horses, cattle and sheep. He was twice elected to represent East Bourke in Parliament. He wa3 attracted to Southland some thirty years ago, and shortly after arriving there purchased the Strathmore Estate of 3000 acres, in the Otatau district, and later on, the Gladfield property of 14,000 acres. Large sums were spent in improvements, but eventually the properties were sold, and Mr Mackintosh took up his residence in Invercargill. He had taken an active interest in all public movements, having been a member of the Southland Provincial Council and a member and chairman of Wallace County Council. He contested th« Mataura seat unsuccessfully in 1887, but in 1890 was elected for Wallace, and re-elected in 1893, but suffered defeat at the last election. A public-spirited settler, full of enterprise, the deceased gentleman did an immense amount of good to the Western District of Southland, and many settlers there owe their prosperity to the start they received while in his employ. Of late years Fortune has not smiled upon him. He leaves a grown-up family of seven sons and four daughters.
