Nea, subsequent to foaling the Caulfield Cup winner, Cremorne, was mated with a trotting stallion. Mr JBusch's colt Prospect, by Apremont Spec, looks as though he will yet do credit to his breeding. Labrador won the Great Foal Stakes decided at the Newmarket First October Meeting on Sept. 29. The brood mare Lady Lege., by St Leger — Lady Mersey, died recently, after foaling to Seaton Delaval. Liberator was never prominent in the Spring Hurdle Race, occupying a position in the rear the whole time. f Mr W. S. Cox, the celebrated Victorian cross-country amateur rider, has decided to become a professional. A report of the race will be found in another column. At the Moonee Valley (Victoria) Meeting on Oct. 2_, Hium 7st lllb won the Ngarveno Handicap, of 50 soys, five furlongs. Aughadowey burst a bloodvessel while competing in the Hurdle Race on the second day of the Auckland Second Spring Meeting. Captive's friends must be pretty well satisfied now that the resuscitated Captivator horse was out-classed in the New Zealand Cup. At the Carterton Show last week, Egalite was first, Forester second and Administrator third in the thoroughbred stallion class. Newhaven is to be taken to England after the Victoria Racing Club's Autumn Meeting, at which he is engaged in the Champion Stakes. Arquebus ran surprisingly well in the Riccarton Welter Handicap, but this fact probably only proves what a poor lot followed him home. On the Tuesday before he won the Victoria Derby, Newhaven accomplished one of the best gallops over a mile and a half ever seen at Flemington. Siren, the dam of Decoy, who finished third in the Welcome Stakes, is a daughter of St George and Watersprite, and is an inmate of the Elderslie stud. It was refreshing to hear the lusty cheers when it was seen that Lady Zetland, one of the most popular animals in the colony, was winning the Cup. Mahaki surprised Riccarton trackwatchers by the position he occupied in the New Zealand Cup, especially during the latter portion of the race. The ability of amateur horsemen, always a questionable point, was not improved in the opinion of the public by the riding in the Ladies' Purse at Riccarton It is believed that after a lengthy spell Wallace will stand training again. The son of Carbine is to be mated with three of the St Albans mares this season. Multiform, who ran a dead heat with Sir Launcelot in the Welcome Stakes, is a particularly handsome colt — a bigger edition of his full brother Uniform. The totalisator attendants were quite unable to cope with the business at Riccarton on Monday. In addition, they appeared somewhat slower than usual. Grand Cross, although much improved in appearance since sold by Mr Stead, finished almost last in tho Maiden Plate at Riccarton on Monday. He is none too sound. ! Many racing men exjjress the opinion that had Euroclydon been given a few good rousing gallops in public, last year's winner would ijust about have won the New Zealand Cup. Lady Zetland's victory in the New Zealand Cup was a bad one for the ring, but the bookmakers would have been much more heavily struck had Euroclydon been successful. The <£201S invested on the totalisator on Euroclydon is the largest sum ever invested on one horse in the colony. Last year .£7_2 was invested on Gipsy Grand the favourite. On the Saturday before .ho won the Maribyrnong Plato Keera carried 7st 31b and appropriated the Sb' Albans Handicap for two-year-olds, at the Moonee Valley (Victoria) Cup meeting. Epaulet held third position in the New Zealand Cup half a mile from home, but quickly dropped back once the straight was entered. He came again, however, finally finishing fifth just behind The Possible. Had it not been for the protest entered in the Spring Hurdle Race,it is possible that the totalisator turnover on the first day at Riccarton would have constituted a colonial record, which is at present held by South Austrrtlia. Masliam Lodge was once more tp the fore on Monday, appropriating the Ladies' Purse by the aid of Taipari, and The Shorts with Venom. The win of the former was mainly attributable to the riding oi" Mr H. G. Pitt. Had Moore, who had the mount on Sir Launcelot in the Welcome Stakes, not taken matters quite so easily when half way down the straight, his mount might just about have won. Venom's performance in The Shorts partially bore out the good opinion formed of him by his former owner, P. Butler. Previous to being gelded Venom was particularly smart. He is not blessed with the best of tempers. Daredevil failed to maintain the reputation established by him in the North Island. His ears aro of the mule variety, and in this respect he resembles Spade Guinea, who, it will be remembered, won the New Zealand Cup in 18S6.
