THE IMPENDING ELECTION.

In connection with the impending election for the Christchurch constituency, a large and very influential deputation waited last evening upon Mr J. L. Scott. The speakers strongly urged Mr Scott to allow himself to b? nominated in the event of a vacancy being declared,' assuring him that he would receive a large measure of support from various sections of the community. In reply, Mr Scott warmly expressed his sense of the high compliment that had been paid to him, and explained that business oonsiderations had prevented, and for the time being must continue to prevent hv"\ from acceding to the request. He was, however, in communication on the subject with his brother and partner, who was in the North Island. Just at that moment a telegram was handed to Mr Scott. It proved to be from his brother, who unhesitatingly gave his assent to the proposed course. Thereupon Mr Scott said "Yes " to the request of the deputation, and stated his determination to contest the seat, in the probable event of there being a vacancy, against all comers.
