Malicious Cbueltt. — Oa Sunday last a valuable pony belonging to Mr A. Reid, of North Street, Ss Albanu, was found with his throat cut in a paddock in Barbadoes Street, in which it had been tunning. The connective readings were .give by Miss WilebD, and there wag a very good attendance. Football.— On Saturday, at Lancaster Park, the interprovincial football match, Canterbury v. Wairarapa will b? played, commencing at three o'clock. An amusing handbill has been issued containing sketches of members, of the Canterbury team that will be recognised by the initiated. "WkiiTEß Work Fund. — In consequence of the funds running low all the men : engaged on relief works in the. city were. ' discharged last evening. This morning, the Mayor and Mr W. B. Mitchell inveati- , gated the cases of ninety-eight applicants for work, and after carefully considering all the circumstances fifty of the most necessitous men with families dependent upon, them were taken on again. Bankruptcy.— The first meeting of the creditors of Obed Giles, of Eaiapoi, farmer, appointed for 11 a.m. to-day, lapsed for want of a quorum. Mr Scott appeared for the bankrupt, whose statement showed debti to unsecured creditors, J385 12s ; assets (furniture), JB10; deficiency, .£75 12s. JSIO 03 Id. •TTNBHPtoTED.— A number of unemployed men pat at the historical lamp-post in CMJte&ai Square this afternoon, whenaddfaislo were given by Messrs Powell and Da6dm.be. The former called upon the Government to put in hand theconettuction of the Midland Railway at once, in. order to find work. Resolutions were -passed, thanking the Mayor for the action he had taken in connection with the Winter 'Work Belief Fund, to the local bodies who had found work, and to those ■who had subscribed bo liberally to the fund. Taxing Charge. — Considerable excitement was occasioned in Lyttelton last evening by a bullock, which had been . landed $rom the .Flora and had got away the rest of the herd. The animal was very wild, and went careering through the •treete._ Ab it was lame its progress was not rapid, but it succeeded in overturning one resident, and went in hot pursuit of another. The animal, however, stumbled in the side channel and fell heavily. It wAs unable to get up, and remained lying in the street until this forenoon, when the 'Inspector of Nuisances, acting on an order received from the Magistrate, shot it, and the carcase was removed. Banqioba. Cricket Club.— The annnal meeting of thia club was held at the Bed Lion Hotel, Bangiora, last night. There a good attendance. The report was ■ satisfactory and the balance-sheet showed a credit-balance of .£1 6s. Mr H. Cave was presented with a bat for the best batting average last season.' The following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr. D. Buddo, BULK. ; president, Mr J. Sansom ; captain, Mr.M. Scott; secretary, Mr J. Anderson} treasurer, Mr F. Gulliver, and last yeat'a Committee with one or two additions. The fiction, ■sketches and illustrations are excellent, and the number will well maintain the nnapproached popularity of the Canterbury Times amongßt all classes of readers. Estudiantina Band Conceet. — The concert to be given at the Theatre Boyal this evening, in aid of the funds of the Estndiantina Band, promises to be a Bucceaa in every way. A very large J number of ticketß have been sold, and an j „ excellent programme has been provided. j Ohbist's College.— A very successful entertainment waß given last evening at Chriaf b College in aid of the Games Fund. There was a large attendance. Songs were sung by Messrs G. March, Hugh Beeves, ,A. Mertonand Masters A. Biinz, E. Lake and B. Vincent. Part songs were sung by the school choir, and the school band played a number of selections. The second part of the entertainment consisted of scenes from . The Rivals, the charaotera being taken by Masters L. Donkin, A. E. Eattray, B. Cotterill, M. S. Ormsby, W. Macbeth, H. Holderness, A. C. Grant, M. fcoujMOO, L. Blunden and P. Lindsay.

Cattm Faie. — The annual Ainurl ; cattle fair haa been fixed for Sept. 27, when the nanal draft of steers aud heifers , from Leslie Hilla will be offered. j ; Chimney on Fibe.— About twenty-five minutes to niae o'clock last night a chimney caught fire in a cottage in Salisbury Street east, near Manchester Street, occupied by a man named John Byan. An alarm was given from the , electric box opposite Mr Meddinga' house, > in Colombo Street, the bells were mug and the engines turned out, but the fire was extinguished before any damage was done. ■ St John's —A dramatic and musical ' entertainment was given in St John's schoolroom last .evening by the Christchurch Amateur Dramat : c Club. There was a fair attendance, and the proceedd were in aid of the Sunday School fund?. Vccal items were well rendered by Misa Ha j dan, Messrs J. Bain, Buckeridge and G. F. H. Barnei; Mr H. Tombs contributed a violin solo, and Mr P. Byan recitations. Two farces, Ticket of Leave and Let it to Me, were very creditably performed by members of the oiub.

Caledonian Socibty.— There was a very good attendance at the weekly entertainment of the Caledonian Society last night. Dr Thomas, one of the vice-president.", occupied the chair. The programme, which was given under the direction of Mr J. Moir, was an exceedingly good one, and was very well rendered. Songs, were sung by Mrs Mitchell, Miißes Maddieon Moir, Bone and Mmrs Moir, Wagstaff and Clark. Pipe music was played by Piperß M'Taviah and Wade. Masters Wade and Stewart danced a Highland fling. After the concert a. very" pleasant dance was held.

The Late Mh G. Hart. — The bo-3y of the late Mr George Hart was buried in the Publio Cemetery, Linwood, yesterday afternoon. A ntimberof old colonists followed the hearse and mourning, coach to the cemetery, and amonpr those present at the grave were :• The Yen Archdeacon Cholmohdeley, Dra Prins and Sjmes, Messrs M. Stitt, J. B, Sheath, D. Cameron, J. Deana, ,A. D. M'llraitb, W. H. Hargreavea, J. M. Hey wood, J. B. Fisher, H. Nelson, C. G. Matson, H. Cottenll and others. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. A. W. Averill.

Plttmbees and GASFiTTBas' Union. — A very* pleasant gathering took place at Hobbs's Assembly- Booms on Tuesday night, when the members of the union entertained. Messra J. D. Colville, Morrison and Bradford at a concert and dance. About fifty couples- .were present. . Mr W. 0. Large referred to the services rendered to the Union by these gentlemen, and Mr J. D. Colville briefly responded. Some very good songs were sang' by Misses M. Wilson and Jamison and Messrs W. Dixie, C. Eldridga and EL Morrison. Danoing was kept up until the email hours to excellent music provided by. Mr C. H. Fox. Mr C. W. Colviile was an efficient M.C.

PBEBENrATioN.r-.A number of gentlemen wishing to recognise the attention paid to buyers and sellers at the Adding ton market, by Mr Peter Elder, the aheep clasßer, decided to collect an amount in small euma ' and make him a present. Subscriptions were limited tohalf a crown, and a suitable testimonial was bought and presented to him. The gentleman who made the presentation referred to the diligent manner in whioh the recipient did his work and to his invariable courtesy to all with whom he came in contact.. The fact was also .mentioned, that during the late severe winter Mr Elder wa3 the only officer of the Yards Company for whom no shelter had been provided, and he had to be ou in all weathers. Mr Elder, in acknowledging the presentation, expressed hia determination to continue to do his duty to both the company and its clients.
