[Per Press Association.J WELLINGTON, Dec 4. j Captain Fairchild, of the Hinemoa, who ■ is returning from a cruise to the Southern | Islands, wired this morning from Nugget ' Point lighthouse to the Marine Department as follows : — " The barque Spirit of the Dawn was wrecked on Antipodes Island on Sept. 4. The captain and four men were drowned. We found eleven of the crew on the island in a desperate state. One man will have to be sent to the hospital. Hiß toes have dropped off through exposure and cold." The Hinemoa is on her way to Dunedin, and should reach there about three o'clock to-day* The Spirit of the Dawn was an iron barque of 692 tons net, commanded by Captain E. T. Millington, built in 1869 at Sunderland and owned by J. Bell and Sons, Liverpool. The crew of the Spirit of the Dawn were eighty-eight days on the island, and within a couple of miles of a depdt with provisions, but were unacquainted with its existence. The vessel bad a cargo of rice. The survivors subsisted on Penguins and their eggs. The captain, the carpenter, the cook and one seaman were drowned*
