THE CITY.

Considerable interest was excited to-day by the polling for the election of the Mayor of Christchurch for the ensuing year. The Returning Officer, Mr G. L. Lee, and his clerk, Mr T. Turner, were kept steadily employed at the City Counoil Chamber, which was the polling plaoe, in receiving the votes of the burgesses. A considerable number of persons were to be seen around the Chambers during the day, and vehicles were freely used to bring voters to the poll.' One of the candidates, Mr Eden George, Had a- Committee marquee, decorated with a conple of -flags, on the vacant section opposite the polling place. The supporters of 'Mf J- T.

.Smith-had a table, with copies of the roll in oharge 'of one of their number, nnder the verandah of the Chambers, close to the entrant* of the polling place. Here, also, waß stationed one of Mr Thomson's friends, "checking off" the burgeßsea as they entered to vote. The proceedings were thoroughly quiet and good-humoured throughout the day. The poll will close at 6 p.m., and the result will probably be posted up outside the Council Chambers abont an hour later.
