Excursionists leave Christ- | church by the 7.55 a.m. train. } False Alarm. — Some mischievous per- ; son turned tho Fire Brigade and their 1 plant out at the early hour of half-past ! four o'clock this morning for no purpose. The alarm box at the Junction Hotel, Victoria street, wbb found to be broken, and the knob pulled, but when Superintendent Turton and his engines got there they could find no signs of a fire. I Kaiapoi Sailing Club. — The second '■ race of the season took place on Saturday i last, when the following boats started :— : Ina, scr; Hero and Lotus, 3Amin; White j Arrow, Gmin. Owing to the Hero and I White Arrow turning the wrong buoy, the | Lotus' crew protested. The Ina's crew, for | some reason best known to themselves, went cruising instead of racing. North-west Ward. — The nominations of candidates for the election of one Councillor for the North-west Ward of the ! City closed at noon tc-day. Messrs W. I. ! Ballinger and E. W. Humphreys were ! duly nominated. The polling will take I place at tho City Council Chambers on j Tuesday, Dec. 30, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. i St Mary's, Addingtgn. — A sale of work ! will take plate in the parish schoolroom !on Thursday next. The sale will open at j 2 p.m., and during the evening there will Ibe a concert. The articles to be sold comi prise suitable things for the Christmas \ season, at very low prices. j Dredging the Harbour. — The question i of dredging Lyttelfcon harbour came before i a special meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour | Board to-day. Upon the motion of Mr ! Wright, the matter was referred to the j Harbour Improvement and Finance Committee, with definite instructions as to the lines upon which they are to report to the Board. St Albans Main School. — The prizes won by the scholars attending the St Albans nauin school were distributed by Mr Waymonth, Chairman of the School Committee, thi3 afternoon. A large number of the parents were present, and the children sang & number of glees, which showed their proficiency in singing, and were a pleasure for the hearers to listen to. Naval Patrol. — A novel sight could be seen in Chrietchurch on Sunday. A picket ! of Blue Jackets from H.M.S. Curaeoa was patrolling the streets on the look out for j aDy of the crew who had over-stopped i their furlough from the vessel. Such pickets ! are common enough in cities where Her Majesty's ships are regularly stationed, but quite a novelty here. Cool Stokage. — The Eailway Commissioners are, it appeared from a meeting of the Harbour Board held to-day, the only obstacle to the erection of the muchneeded shed for the cool storage of dairy produce at Lyttelton. They were asked to give their consent by a letter from the Board's Secretary sent on Dec. 8, and to that letter no reply has yet been received. The Commissioners have, however, expressed themselves as anxious to co- | operate with the Board in the matter, and therefore it may be hoped that their reply will be favourable when it comes. St Albans Wesletan School.— The anniversary services in connection with this school were held in the St Albans Wesleyan Church yesterday, and were well attended. The Eev J. Hoatson conducted that in the morning, and the Rev E. Taylor those in the afternoon and evening. Collections were made in aid of the Sunday school funds. The church was very effectively decorated. Sacred symbols in flowers and evergreens were placed on the walls, together with appropriate texts in | white letters on a Bcarlet ground. Kaiapoi Eegatta. — A meeting of the Committee was held on Thursday, Mr W. Hume presiding. The Ball Committee reported that they had arranged with Mrs Edgar's band. It was resolved to sell the right of sports to Mr Burnip. It was resolved to write to the Manager of Tramways re advertising on tram cars. Messrs Higgins and Pearce were asked to try and arrange with the local band for Eegatta day. The next meeting of Committee was fixed for Dec. 20. North- West Waed. — Mr W. I. Ballinger, who was at an early period nominated for the North-west Ward, withdrew his nomination this afternoon. Mr Ballinger had been promised the support of a large number of friends, who hold him in great respect ; but he finds that Mr Humphreys will be equally acceptable to them. He, therefore, with thanks to those who would have voted for him, retires in favour of a gentleman who, he feels, has more time to devote to the interests of the City. Druids' Gala Privileges.— Mr Bowman sold the privileges in connection with the Druids' gala, at his rooms, thia afternoon. No. 1 publican's booth fell to Mr Bullivant for £2*l; No. 2 publican's booth to Mr Eavenhill for £li; No. 1 confectioner's booth to Mr Minchinton for .£10; No. 2 confectioner's booth to Mr Edwards for .£l2 ; the luncheon booth to Mr Minchinton for £5 ; and the fruit stall to Mr Eobinson for £2 10s. , The total amount realised by the sale was £66 10s. Last year the privileges realised j650 10a. It is satisfactory to note there is an advance, though a slight one, as the result of this year's sale. Concert and Ball at KimvEE. — This event, in connection with the Athletic Club, took place on Friday night, and was a decided success. The concert, which was held in the Town Hall, was well patronised, and some excellent songs were given, Miss Stewart proving herself an efficient accompanist. After the concert, an adjournment was made to the grain shed (kindly lent for the occasion by Captain Tos3will), which was nicely decorated, and thus transformedinto a beautiful ballroom. As M.C.'s, Messrs Denby and Painter left nothing to be desired. Upwards of one hundred guests commenced dancing soon after ten, and continued with vigour till four o'clock.
