Such pickets ! are common enough in cities where Her Majesty's ships are regularly stationed, but quite a novelty here. Cool Stokage. — The Eailway Commissioners are, it appeared from a meeting of the Harbour Board held to-day, the only obstacle to the erection of the muchneeded shed for the cool storage of dairy produce at Lyttelton. They were asked to give their consent by a letter from the Board's Secretary sent on Dec. 8, and to that letter no reply has yet been received. The Commissioners have, however, expressed themselves as anxious to co- | operate with the Board in the matter, and therefore it may be hoped that their reply will be favourable when it comes. Ballinger, who was at an early period nominated for the North-west Ward, withdrew his nomination this afternoon. Mr Ballinger had been promised the support of a large number of friends, who hold him in great respect ; but he finds that Mr Humphreys will be equally acceptable to them.
