All who respect true manliness will read with genuine sorrow the announcement that appears in another column of the death of Mr William Varnham Millton. The deceased was a native of New Zeala.nd, and distinguished himself at Christ's College, where he took a Provincial scholarship and other honours, and was besides an ardent supporter of athletic sports. On leaving college he adopted the law as a profession, and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the ' Supreme Court. He still preserved his love for manly sports, and was captain of the United Cricket Club, as well as of the Canterbury Eleven: In football, too, he was equally prominent, being Captain of the Christchurch Club for a number of years, Secretary of the Rugby Union, and also captain of the team which visited Sydney some seasons back. Not only was he foremost in athletic pursuits, but he was an enthusiastic volunteer. Ab coloursergeant of the Christ's College Rifles he helped not a little to raiee that Company to ita present high state of efficiency. His untimely death, at the age of 20 — which occurred at his residence in Chester street at 10 o'clock last night — has removed a gentleman who had a useful career before him, and one 'who had made personal friends of all who came into contact with him.
