Mr White has taken this Btep in consequence of his medical advisers telling him that he must retire for a year or two from public life. He delayed as long as possible, thinking to be able to sit out the present Parliament, but found that his health necessitated his immediate retirement. He, however, did not send in his resignation till he had consulted the Premier, and learnt from him that there wo'ild bo timo for th<? election of his successor before Parliament meets.
