School Committees.

EAST CHRISTCHURCH. The ordinary monthly meeting was held on Friday evening ; present— Mr M. Sandstein (Chairman), the Rev* G. Bond, and Messrs M. W. Green, Hulbert, Parkes and C. Smith. The Visiting Committees of the South Town Belt and Phillipstown Bide schools reported that various matters of repairs, &c, to buildings, fences and drains were urgently needing attention. The head master, in his monthly report, also referred to these requirements. The Chairman stated he had repeatedly urged the Board to put these necessary works ia hand, and that though they had been authorised some time ago nothing was done. Out of various applicants Mr Dewey was appointed caretaker to the Phillipstown side school. The water eupply at the main school was reported to be fading owing to the lack of wind. The Visiting Committee were requested to enquire into the matter and report to the Board of Education. The Chairman reported that the Board of Education could not see its way to purchase the late site of the Linwood Congregational church owing to lack of funds. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Green, seconded by Mr Hulbert — " That corporal punishment be absolutely prohibited in the schools in the district unless inflicted by the head master or head mistress, and that notices to that effect be posted up in the schools.". A letter from the police department was submitted stating that a caution had been administered to a father who persisted in keeping his child from school. Approved. Mr Parkes moved, in pursuance of notice given by him last meeting — " That in the true interests of the children, it is advisable that a portion of the scriptures be read by them at the opening of school each day, and the Lord's Prayer be reverentially recited, prodded such can be done without violating the requirements of the Education Act." Seconded by Mr Green and carried. It was also resolved — "That a meeting of the householders of the East Chrretchurch educational district be called by circular and advertisement, to be held in the Oddfellows' Hall, East Belt, to discuss the matter of the foregoing resolution, such meeting to be called by the Chairman for Friday evening, July 17, at half-past seven After passing some accounts the meeting adjourned.
