The show of hands was— Fish, 78 ; Gore, 69. The Dunedin East nominations were Messrs Matthew Woods Green and Robert Stout. The show of hands was — Stout, 100; Green, 51. For Dunedin Central, Messrs T. Bracken, J. B. Bradshaw, and J. G. S. Grant were nominated. The show of hands was . in favour of Mr Bracken. Grant's nomination is ridiculed. The Peninsula nominations were Messrs W. J. M. Larnach, Owen James Hodge and John Wells. The show of hands gave Larnach 50, Hodge 30, and Wells 8. For Wakatipu, Messrs Fergus, S. N. Brown and J. T. Hornsby were nominated. For Roslyn, Messrs John Bathgate and Archibald Hilson Ross were proposed. Mr John Grigg, of Longbeach, was nominated, his intended candidature having been kept quiet till last night. The show of hands gave 93 for Ivess, 40 for Grigg, and 100 for Philip M'Guire, a weak-minded ploughman who has now and again made foolish and comical political and other 1 speeches. A poll was demanded for Mr Ivess. ELECTED. WELLINGTON, July 15. Dr Newman was the only candidate proposed for Thorndon, and was declared duly elected CAVERSHAM, July 18. Mr William Barron was returned unopposed. PORT CHALMERS, July 15. For Port Chalmers, Mr James Macandrew was declared elected, there being no opposition. About 60 ratepayers were present. BALCLUTHA, July 15. Mr J. W. Thomson was returned unopposed for Clutha. ST ALBANS. The nomination of candidates for the representation of St Albans took place this morning at the Borough Council office, Papanui Road. Mr R. F. Holderness, Returning Officer for the Electoral District, presided, aud about 50 electors were present. The Returning Officer, before reading the writ, expressed a hope thatthe election would be conducted as orderly as was the case on the last occasion, and that in the event of disallowance of votes, it would be remembered that this was unavoidable as long as there was a rush to get registered at the last moment. He was now ready to receive nominations. The following candidates were then nominated in the order given : — Francis James Gar rick, proposed by Mr William Hinton and seconded by Mr C. W. Ttlrner. Thornhill Cooper, proposed by Mr W. J. Brooker and seconded by Mr Alexander Rountree. Joseph Jebson, proposed by Mr William A. Brown and seconded by Mr Henry Hookham. The candidates then delivered Bhort addresses. Mr Garbick said it was not usual to make long speeches on this occasion, and he had already placed his views fully before the electors. He had lived amongst them for many years, and believed that if returned to Parliament, he could be of some service to the district. The only objection urged against him was that he was a lawyer. This, in his opinion, was rather a recommendation. The manner in which social legislation was passed through Parliament was a disgrace. The Bankrupcty Act of last session, for instance, had been pronounced one of the most absurd and unworkable pieces of legisla tion that had ever been foisted upon a community. Jf elected he would give special attention to matters that were strictly legal,*and hoped that at the close of the session he would be able to give a good account of himself in this respect. One of his principal aims would be to consolidate the Municipal Acts. He thanked his proposer and seconder for having nominated him. (Cheers.) Mr Cooper said that when he addressed the electors in the evening he would talk to them about law — not from the lawyers' point of view, but that of the community. He wanted to reduce the lawyers' fees, and Mr Garrick only wished to reduce the Court fees. His (Mr Cooper's) plan would save hundreds of thousands of pounds to the country in legal costs, as it would reduce the opportunities for litigation. Lawyers, although a useful class, lived on the vices and the follies of mankind. (Hisses and laughter.) He would speak to them more fully on the subject in the evening. (A Voice: You will have an empty house, old man.) (Laughter.) Mr Jebson said that he did not come forward to oppose Mr Garrick on personal grounds, but because he felt that the interests of that gentleman and of his (Mr Jebson's) own class were far apart, and he was afraid Mr Garrick would not give his time and attention to advocating the interests of that particular class. He wished to give the electors of St Albans an opportunity of saying whether they would perpetuate the action of the past, and continue to entrust their interests to persons not of their own class ; and if returned — as to which he was not altogether without hope — he would be able to devote the whole of his time and whatever intelligence he possessed to the interests of his constituents. A show of hands was then taken with the following result : Mr Garrick 42 Mr Jebson 5 Mr Cooper 3 Mr Jebson demanded a poll, which the Returning-Officer announced would be taken on July 22. The declaration of the poll would take place at noon on the fallowing day. A vote of thanks to the ReturningOfficer concluded the proceedings.
